EP4: October Fun Times

This is the Fairview, TN News from Oct 1-Oct 8th 2025.
Howdy
Welcome to Episode 4 of Hello Fairview, your local podcast made right here in Fairview, for people in Fairview and the surrounding areas. This is a weekly show, released every Wednesday, featuring stories that aim to inform and inspire. Local Radio stations don’t exist in small towns like ours, so we will use Hello Fairview to fill that void with news related to Fairview. This is a Value for Value podcast, which means you contribute what you can based on the value you receive. This concept was founded by the PodFather himself, Adam Curry, and his Co-host, John C. Dvorak of the No Agenda Show, almost 18 years ago.
Currently, this is a one-man operation, so if you have any ideas, events, business opportunities, or job openings, please don't hesitate to let me know. You are a producer of this show; you are not the product, because your time and attention are not being sold to advertisers for value. Some shows will be longer, and others will be shorter, but I will do my best to keep things relevant.
Traffic Time
Cumberland and 100 are now a bigger mess, with Cumberland Road actually closed as they grade the area to help level the intersection while also adding turn lanes. School is out this week, so things are flowing because 100 isn’t getting closed regularly. I hope they can finish this phase by next week, when school is in session, because that will cause a lot more problems, as traffic will have to navigate the detour on Cumberland and avoid the congestion around the Middle and High School. We have more than a year left of this project so that I can see the other side of the street will need to be closed for a couple of weeks and then other times as they do different things.
Redlight Update – We currently have three (Old Cox, Publix, & Walmart), but we will soon be getting one at the new City Center Entrance. The poles went up this week. I hope they are not turned on too soon because traffic already backs up beyond that light from Publix. So, if they are not synchronized, traffic will be worse from Old Cox to Publix, which already takes 10-20 minutes during rush hours each day. There will be another one at Cumberland when that expansion occurs, and I’m not sure how it will help or hurt yet, but I hope the crossing guard will be able to control it during the morning and evening school rush.
Highway 100 at City Center – There will still be some construction closures here and there as the drainage, roads, and sidewalks are prepared around City Center and Cumberland.
Future Projects – I still need to find out more about this project because I wonder the costs of these sidewalks to understand if it will be worth it when the dust settles and one day the road gets widened and they will have to be torn up and replaced again. I know we are stuck in a loop where we are not big enough to expand and grow to become big enough to expand.
Future Projects – Sidewalks from Fairview Rec Center to Bowie Park (TDOT State Project 94013-2220-14 (2220 Right of Way, 3220 Construction) July 21st 2026

County Side Note – There is a new Greenways Plan Survey available for you to complete between now and October 23rd. This will tell the county how to plan their next design workshop and what people think. https://www.williamsoncounty-tn.gov/Greenways, and some details on the plan can be found here https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:US:1a33a0c4-6809-436d-b8c9-737b53f7002e
Back to Our City News

This night, 225 houses were approved by these Rezonings and Annexations into the City. Chris McDonald also questioned some aspects related to the number of lots and what that growth would mean, but Mrs. Roberts was the winner of the meeting's “why” discussion.

The State of TN (Not In Order)
- The Memphis National Guard is still active, with mixed reports; crime is reportedly decreasing.
- Special Primary wrapped up with Van Epps winning the Republican Nomination and Aftyn Behn for the Democratic Nomination for the 7th District at the US House. There was more chatter on the Republican side because he doesn't live in the District.
- December 2 will be another special election.
- Nashville East Bank Development is going, but a lot of taxpayer money is being used to subsidize this project, which will have around 700 affordable houses for 99 years, but Metro has had to give them around 3 million dollars to keep it going. This relates to the 2.1 billion dollar stadium that is using 1.26 billion in public funding.
- Nashville Airport is a hot
- Music City Loop is still a hole.
The Bills
Here is what we have for this week. Wow, I found a real agenda with helpful information. When things are not public and posted, it makes the meetings feel secretive and unaccountable because they are spending our taxes without any disclosure outside of those rooms, and, of course, the news doesn’t cover this. I want to try and do more here, but that will require some additional work. I would love to conduct an interview with some people for this segment as a special episode.

How’s the hill, weather report
Back to it, How’s the hill? Passable, we have got some rain and some storms since last week. The weather guessers say this week is still looking to be with highs in the mid 70s with lows in the high 40s to 50s. Not a lot of rain is forecasted, so we need to cut our grass a little longer.
New Businesses
Cornerstone Financial will be open on October 14th. There is still an open slot at Bowie Commons at Publix. Other than that, I spotted nothing new this week, and I'm waiting to see what else is coming.
Make sure to head to the Farmers Market every Saturday Morning 8AM to 12PM (Not Earlier as other posts have posted) at Meseck Chiropractor and Fairview Fresh Deli for their life-changing Apple Fritters, located down the road from Publix. So many good places to get fresh breads and treats, local fruits and vegetables, along with some beef, pork, hot sauce, fishing lures, and other holiday gifts this time of the year.
Brick and Mortar Highlight
Vigilance Martial Arts
https://www.vigilancemartialarts.com/
They have a fantastic program from ages 5 to adults for Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. They have two locations, with one in Fairview at 96, near the intersection with 100, across from the Lions Baseball/Softball field and the other in DIckson. They do a lot more than teach your kids moves; they will also teach them about how to better themselves, and kids with a lot of life skills mixed in. If you go there, you may see some people you know or who your kids learn from, which will make it that much easier to get into the groove and have fun. They currently have a back-to-school special for $ 75, which includes the first month and the uniform. There aren't many sports that are that cheap to start.
Local Business Highlight
Fairview Trash
They have been more than a trash company in this community. They support almost every team, school activity, and all around town. You will see their yellow trash cans up and down the streets. They charge $35 per month or $45 for two, but you can prepay for the year because you know we will have trash and save 2 months of fees .
Job Openings
City – Police Officer
Walmart – Multiple
Cornerstone Financial Credit Union – Teller Universal Associate
Publix – Pharmacy Technician
The Pearl - Housekeeper
Does anyone else have job postings they would like to share and have read weekly? Just fill out the contact form on the website.
History Nugget
- A historical marker on Horn Tavern Road commemorates the Horn Tavern, established around 1809. This early 19th-century establishment, named for its distinctive sign featuring painted animal horns, served as a gathering place during Fairview’s formative years. The marker highlights the tavern’s role in the area’s early development and its importance for locals and travelers.

For the Kids
There are numerous options in Fairview to keep your kids involved in activities and sports. There is a thriving Girl Scout and Scouts BSA Programs in Fairview. There are many recreation and travel teams. There is also LaLa’s Dance Studio and Elevate Gymnastics and Cheer. There is also an excellent Taekwondo and Jujitsu school that teaches more than just moves, called Vigilance Martial Arts. We also have a great wrestling program with some summer options.
Jackets Youth Wrestling has an Open Gym Night on October 10th from 330-500PM at the Elevate Gym. We have an excellent opportunity to explore and have some fun. Our wrestling program, which spans from Kindergarten to High School, has produced some state champions who have gone through this program.

Jacket News - The Homecoming Parade was epic, with trailers, decorations, and teams rocking it. Traffic seemed to do ok, and they were going a couple of miles an hour, so it didn’t lock the city down. It was great to see how many people came out to watch and support our students; those students are the closest to becoming the next generation of leaders, and our support is crucial to their futures. There is no newsletter this week since they are off for fall break, so I have only what was published before. The annual Pumpkin Patch has started and will continue until October 31st, which will be at Apex Bank from 9AM-9PM each day, and this will help fund the FHS Athletic Committee for upcoming activities. The Fall market is on November 15th from 9 AM to 3 PM. This is a great place to do your Christmas shopping, just like our weekly Farmers Market, to support local businesses. Art Club will be starting soon, so please turn your forms in. SockTober starts with the NHS and the Beta Club, who are collecting socks for Graceworks from now until October 24th. The Spanish Honor Society, which is open to students who have taken Spanish and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, is available for membership. PSAT will be administered on October 23rd. Every Friday this School year Kona Ice and Tom’s Coffee will be there at lunch time. Senior Portraits and Senior Ads are due by November 21, 2025. October 18, Saturday, ACT at Fairview (Register at ACT.org), October 21, ACT for Seniors.

No School on October 31st (I think this is a first that I can remember)
Faith Moment
This is a good part of the sermon from One Church Home and Pastor Ian Gilchrist from 1st Peter on “Standing Firm Together”. Talking about walking in submission to life and how things are and can and will be. This is also about discussing marriage and the roles outlined in the Bible, and how those roles translate to the real world.

Donations
On the Donations front, we received 100 Satoshi on Episode Three. If you don’t know what it is, it’s the smallest unit of Bitcoin currency. 1 satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC. satoshi is the namesake of the technical author and creator of Bitcoin. We will have other payment options real soon, just waiting on the tax man stuff to be finished. We covered Fountain and Stripe Setup in the last episode, so there is a Donate button available that allows you to use your Credit Card and other Payment methods through Stripe.
Additionally, a monthly Supporter option is available for just $3.50 per month. If you haven’t seen the website, please take a look. A lot has been added since last week, and I think you will find it helpful, including the calendar, Church and Business List, and more. We will announce your first name or business name if you become a monthly supporter or make a donation of $19.59 or more, unless you include a note stating not to be anonymous (e.g., 'The year we were incorporated'). I hope some businesspeople will support this to make it even better! Be a producer, subscribe, and share with others about this Podcast to help get the news out to everyone in Fairview. I need to catch up on social media things to get the word out, but I’m trying to get the website and payments sorted first.
Thank You
If you have found this podcast helpful, thank you. Please support the show with your time, talents, or treasure. If you have an idea or suggestion, please share it with us. 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,200
Howdy, and welcome to episode four of Hello Fairview, your local podcast made right here
2
00:00:07,200 --> 00:00:10,500
in Fairview for people in Fairview and the surrounding areas.
3
00:00:10,800 --> 00:00:15,680
This is a weekly show released every Wednesday featuring stories that aim to inform and inspire.
4
00:00:16,380 --> 00:00:21,200
Local radio stations don't exist in small towns like ours, so we'll use Hello Fairview
5
00:00:21,200 --> 00:00:25,220
to fill that void and give you news related to Fairview.
6
00:00:25,420 --> 00:00:29,780
This is a value for value podcast, which means you contribute what you can based on the value
7
00:00:29,780 --> 00:00:34,800
received. This concept was founded by the podfather himself, Adam Curry, and his co-host,
8
00:00:34,900 --> 00:00:41,300
John C. Dvorak of the No Agenda Show almost 18 years ago. Currently, this is still just a one-man
9
00:00:41,300 --> 00:00:46,680
band right now. So if you have any ideas, events, or business opportunities, or job openings,
10
00:00:46,880 --> 00:00:51,500
please don't hesitate to let me know. You are a producer of this show. You are not the product
11
00:00:51,500 --> 00:00:57,220
because your time and intention are not being sold to advertisers for value. Some shows are
12
00:00:57,220 --> 00:01:00,900
going to be longer than others. Some will be shorter, but I'll do my best to keep things
13
00:01:00,900 --> 00:01:08,300
relevant. Traffic time. Cumberland and 100 is now a bigger mess with Cumberland Road actually closed
14
00:01:08,300 --> 00:01:13,220
as they grade the area to help level the intersection while adding those turn lanes.
15
00:01:13,880 --> 00:01:18,760
School is out right now this week for fall break, so things have been flowing kind of okay on Highway
16
00:01:18,760 --> 00:01:25,560
100, but we will see what happens from there. I hope they can get this finished by next week,
17
00:01:25,560 --> 00:01:30,640
because if it's not, then I don't see how it's going to really work with middle school and high
18
00:01:30,640 --> 00:01:36,580
school and the congestion related to that in the mornings and afternoons. We have a little more than
19
00:01:36,580 --> 00:01:42,380
a year left on this project, so I can see this happening on the other side of the street and on
20
00:01:42,380 --> 00:01:49,280
the other side of 100. We were going back to one lane every all four directions, so we'll have to
21
00:01:49,280 --> 00:01:55,800
see how that goes. Red light update. We currently have three red lights, one at Old Cox, one at
22
00:01:55,800 --> 00:02:01,640
Publix and one at Walmart. And soon we'll be getting a new one at City City Entrance.
23
00:02:02,240 --> 00:02:08,020
The polls were already up this week. They are not turned on soon because traffic already,
24
00:02:08,320 --> 00:02:13,320
you know, I'm wondering when they do turn it on, what's that going to do to traffic? Because it
25
00:02:13,320 --> 00:02:18,800
usually backs up from Publix all the way to Food Saver pretty much every single day.
26
00:02:19,480 --> 00:02:23,380
So if they're not synchronized, I think it's going to make traffic actually worse.
27
00:02:23,560 --> 00:02:28,720
So we'll have to see because it can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes a day to go from Food Saver
28
00:02:28,720 --> 00:02:32,740
to Publix and Bowie Park right now during those rush hours.
29
00:02:33,720 --> 00:02:37,520
There'll be another one eventually at Cumberland when that expansion finishes.
30
00:02:37,880 --> 00:02:41,360
So I'm not sure how it will help or hurt yet,
31
00:02:41,360 --> 00:02:51,940
But the only thing I hope is that the crossing guard and the police that help us in the afternoons and mornings will be able to control that during those rush hours.
32
00:02:52,200 --> 00:02:53,420
So we will have to see.
33
00:02:54,920 --> 00:03:06,580
Highway 100 and City Center, there's going to continue to be construction closures as they finish the drainage and sidewalks and everything else between City Center and there, along with the closures at Cumberland.
34
00:03:06,580 --> 00:03:11,480
And so future projects, you know, we're still digging around on a lot of this stuff with TDOT,
35
00:03:11,660 --> 00:03:17,520
because one of the things I'm wondering is what the cost is from the sidewalks
36
00:03:17,520 --> 00:03:21,300
that are coming from the park to the rec center,
37
00:03:21,300 --> 00:03:27,180
and how much of that will have to be destroyed when we eventually widen the roads.
38
00:03:27,180 --> 00:03:33,880
Because I know right now we are stuck in a loop where we're not big enough to expand Highway 100 from TDOT's point of view,
39
00:03:33,880 --> 00:03:40,880
but we've not grown big enough to expand. So it's just this self-fulfilling prophecy of stuck.
40
00:03:41,680 --> 00:03:49,780
So we'll keep doing that, keep track of that. We're growing. There is a new Greenway plan
41
00:03:49,780 --> 00:03:56,100
survey that you may want to fill out between now and October 23rd. This will be in the show notes.
42
00:03:56,620 --> 00:04:01,440
This will tell the county how to plan their next design workshop based on what people think
43
00:04:01,440 --> 00:04:06,600
from there. So I've got the survey in there and some of the supporting documents related to that
44
00:04:06,600 --> 00:04:10,620
on the show notes so that you can say how you'd like the parks and walkable and all that.
45
00:04:11,020 --> 00:04:20,240
So back to our school city news. We had the primary election yesterday on the 7th and that
46
00:04:20,240 --> 00:04:27,800
was all that. And the Fairview Masonic Lodge also donated money for Shop with a Cop program
47
00:04:27,800 --> 00:04:34,100
on October 6th. We saw that from the city of Fairview there. And so then let's go to the recap
48
00:04:34,100 --> 00:04:42,920
of the last board of commissioners meeting, which was October 2nd. So October 2nd,
49
00:04:42,920 --> 00:04:49,980
city manager report, October 7th was the fire academy. So they were rocking that. That was
50
00:04:49,980 --> 00:04:55,320
yesterday. The police training range is almost finished with the design, which will come to for
51
00:04:55,320 --> 00:05:01,740
approval and it's not the property has been closed on so that part of it's done they're going to move
52
00:05:01,740 --> 00:05:07,440
as quickly as they can since it is once it's approved in the site plan the design of the
53
00:05:07,440 --> 00:05:15,840
historic village is also expected to be approved soon there is a 50 50 match on funding with some
54
00:05:15,840 --> 00:05:23,340
grant possibilities to help pay for that renovation and there don buffalini was talking about the
55
00:05:23,340 --> 00:05:29,800
reserve fund, which has for the city manager talked about it, that there's $1.7 million in
56
00:05:29,800 --> 00:05:37,480
the reserves, which is around 15% of the annual operations budget. And their goal is to add,
57
00:05:37,880 --> 00:05:42,460
get it to 20% of our annual budget in case something ever comes up. And they're increasing
58
00:05:42,460 --> 00:05:50,660
that retention 1% per year. So he thinks it's around 16 to 17 right now. United Fiverr gave a
59
00:05:50,660 --> 00:05:56,860
plaque and talked about their new eight gigabit networks, which are now possible. They're still
60
00:05:56,860 --> 00:06:01,160
continuing to expand their coverage throughout Fairview, which I think is a significant improvement
61
00:06:01,160 --> 00:06:07,000
compared to what was available previously. So that's really good. That's a really fast way to
62
00:06:07,000 --> 00:06:12,780
have internet. And it's good that it's kind of a company around the road there. And then kind of a
63
00:06:12,780 --> 00:06:17,200
special note of that one, as we get into all the old business and new business from this meeting
64
00:06:17,200 --> 00:06:23,180
in the voting. Carolyn Roberts was definitely the winner of questioning things and trying to
65
00:06:23,180 --> 00:06:29,320
understand how we can slow down our developments with around 3,000 homes still to be built,
66
00:06:29,440 --> 00:06:34,300
but approved at a couple levels, right? Because there's different levels of that.
67
00:06:34,860 --> 00:06:44,000
This night on 10 to 20 to 20, 2025, there was around 225 more homes were approved between the
68
00:06:44,000 --> 00:06:50,300
rezonings and annexations to the city. It won't be that exact number, but it'll be close because
69
00:06:50,300 --> 00:06:56,020
it depends on their final site plots for each one of these places, drainage, EPA,
70
00:06:56,840 --> 00:07:03,840
creeks, valleys, all the stormwater stuff and all that. Chris McDonald was also kind of in second
71
00:07:03,840 --> 00:07:08,300
place for that because he questioned a lot of the aspects during a number of those lots and what the
72
00:07:08,300 --> 00:07:15,860
growth would mean. But Ms. Roberts was definitely the winner of the meeting of asking why, which was
73
00:07:15,860 --> 00:07:20,580
great because I don't know if we need to keep growing at some crazy rate. And that was even
74
00:07:20,580 --> 00:07:25,620
one of the comments that was even said during that meeting is that we are one of the slowest
75
00:07:25,620 --> 00:07:32,540
growing county cities within the county. And I don't think that is a bad thing. So on old business
76
00:07:32,540 --> 00:07:40,200
from that 10-2-5, the ordinance of 2025-19, which was moving $22,000 from the cleaning and cross
77
00:07:40,200 --> 00:07:48,600
guard play to public works, yes, 5-0. Rezoning on Boone Street, which is 17.74 acres, going from
78
00:07:48,600 --> 00:07:57,160
RS-40 to RS-8, which is about 40 to 42 units, that was a yes also. Second and final reading for 2025-18,
79
00:07:57,160 --> 00:08:06,100
which was old Cox Pike, which, uh, was 53.16 acres, which was RS 40 to R 20. Um, that'll be
80
00:08:06,100 --> 00:08:13,980
around 75 houses. That was four, four yes. And one, no with Ms. Roberts being the no, the nay.
81
00:08:14,400 --> 00:08:24,320
Um, and then there was the annexation of Fairview Boulevard, 111 acres, uh, as RS 42 there. Um,
82
00:08:24,320 --> 00:08:31,060
this is at the very edge of the 2040 plan just like that old cox road is which is the edge of
83
00:08:31,060 --> 00:08:36,720
the city because so right beside this new subdivision is a farm and uh so we'll have to
84
00:08:36,720 --> 00:08:42,800
see how that mixes if it's like oil and water or whatever so that 111 acres uh was annexed into the
85
00:08:42,800 --> 00:08:49,640
city yes they think there's going to be 110 to 130 lots it passed four to one yes with miss robert
86
00:08:49,640 --> 00:08:56,380
saying no. Then there was an annexation of 10 acres from RS40, which was a yes with a three to
87
00:08:56,380 --> 00:09:03,420
two vote. And that happened there. And then when it came to the new business, which we think about
88
00:09:03,420 --> 00:09:10,040
all these things, sometimes there's the zoning changes and annexation zoning. I needed to have
89
00:09:10,040 --> 00:09:15,720
more houses than it does now and be allowed to. And then annexation, I'm part of the city and not
90
00:09:15,720 --> 00:09:21,160
county um so otherwise they'd have to go to the county board which i guess they would get denied
91
00:09:21,160 --> 00:09:27,080
i don't know i there's some weird stuff we got some interviews coming for that but 2025 hyphen
92
00:09:27,080 --> 00:09:39,013
20 on pinewood road that same 111 acres uh was wanting to go from rs40 to rs10 that also passed four to one and that around 150 homes off Pinewood Road and 100
93
00:09:40,573 --> 00:09:44,353
And who knows what that's really gonna end up being,
94
00:09:44,493 --> 00:09:47,753
but that is the very edge of Fairview
95
00:09:47,753 --> 00:09:50,653
that is now not going to be commercial.
96
00:09:50,893 --> 00:09:52,813
And that was one of the things that Chris McDonald
97
00:09:52,813 --> 00:09:55,733
and Carolyn Roberts asked about
98
00:09:55,733 --> 00:09:58,193
is that this may mess that up in the future.
99
00:09:58,193 --> 00:10:05,133
uh so it is what it is now uh so now they'll have to submit their their um site plan and everything
100
00:10:05,133 --> 00:10:12,373
like that and then 2025 21 old franklin road east of nottingham drive 10 acres from rs40 to rs20
101
00:10:12,373 --> 00:10:20,513
yeah this is going to be about eight lots they could have left it at rs40 but the problem would
102
00:10:20,513 --> 00:10:25,653
have been is they could have had a couple lots that were too big and too small whereas rs20 lets
103
00:10:25,653 --> 00:10:26,693
Some of them about be the same.
104
00:10:27,293 --> 00:10:31,053
So there could have been 16 houses there, but now there's going to be around eight.
105
00:10:31,213 --> 00:10:34,913
This was three to two with Chris and Carolyn saying no.
106
00:10:35,453 --> 00:10:41,653
And then there was 2025-22, which was Highway 96 or seven acres going from RS-40 to Industrial
107
00:10:41,653 --> 00:10:43,413
General was a yes.
108
00:10:43,473 --> 00:10:44,333
It was unanimous.
109
00:10:44,433 --> 00:10:45,393
Yes, five to zero.
110
00:10:45,393 --> 00:10:48,733
And this is going to be some warehouse things, which actually ought to be pretty cool.
111
00:10:48,833 --> 00:10:50,073
We'll see how that kind of goes.
112
00:10:50,633 --> 00:10:55,313
And when it comes to city meetings, the next one, Planning Commission, is October 14th.
113
00:10:55,313 --> 00:10:57,653
Board of Commissioners is October 16th.
114
00:10:57,973 --> 00:11:03,153
And the Board of Commissioners Town Hall, which is where you get to go speak and do all that.
115
00:11:03,273 --> 00:11:05,293
And we talk about the things that Fairview's done.
116
00:11:05,413 --> 00:11:09,873
So there'll be probably some football team stuff and stuff like that going on is October 28th.
117
00:11:10,053 --> 00:11:11,513
So that is really good.
118
00:11:12,533 --> 00:11:13,733
The state of Tennessee.
119
00:11:15,493 --> 00:11:20,233
The Memphis National Guard is still active with mixed reports.
120
00:11:20,233 --> 00:11:22,973
I guess crime is still decreasing with this.
121
00:11:22,973 --> 00:11:27,033
I have it. There's been so much reporting back and forth. It's really hard to figure it out.
122
00:11:27,493 --> 00:11:33,733
Yesterday was the special election in our seventh district. And this is to take back a seat from the
123
00:11:33,733 --> 00:11:42,513
U.S. House from what is it? Mark Green. And so Van Epps won the Republican nomination and Afton
124
00:11:42,513 --> 00:11:48,213
Ben won the Democratic nomination to the seventh district, the U.S. House. There's a lot of chatter
125
00:11:48,213 --> 00:11:52,513
in this, especially on the Republican side, because Van Epps doesn't even live in the district.
126
00:11:52,973 --> 00:12:01,553
Apparently, there were some rules changed in the Tennessee state laws and that you just have to be a resident of Tennessee to run for any district.
127
00:12:01,733 --> 00:12:03,053
You don't actually have to be here.
128
00:12:03,693 --> 00:12:05,753
So that was kind of interesting.
129
00:12:06,133 --> 00:12:13,353
December 2nd will be the special election, which is where this has been a Republican seat for a long time.
130
00:12:13,353 --> 00:12:24,433
There's hope from the Democrats that they will be able to gain this seat because there's just a very narrow majority difference between the two parties in the U.S. House.
131
00:12:25,193 --> 00:12:30,993
The National East Bank development is still going, but a lot of taxpayer money is being used to subsidize this project.
132
00:12:31,673 --> 00:12:35,813
This is for 700 affordable homes for the next 99 years.
133
00:12:36,333 --> 00:12:39,993
But Metro just had to give $3 million to keep that part of it going.
134
00:12:39,993 --> 00:12:51,153
And this is on top of the $2.1 billion stadium that is using $1.26 billion in public funding between tax raises and everything else.
135
00:12:51,313 --> 00:12:52,893
The airport's still a mess.
136
00:12:53,153 --> 00:12:57,513
Nashville Music City loop is more than just a hole now.
137
00:12:57,893 --> 00:12:59,913
They've started clearing a lot more of the construction site.
138
00:13:00,053 --> 00:13:05,773
And they apparently officially closed on the property where they actually own it now.
139
00:13:05,933 --> 00:13:08,773
So the boring company, I guess, actually owns that piece of property.
140
00:13:08,773 --> 00:13:10,033
I wanted to pull the tax record.
141
00:13:10,173 --> 00:13:11,293
It hasn't shown up yet.
142
00:13:11,733 --> 00:13:12,673
The bills.
143
00:13:13,173 --> 00:13:14,233
Here's what we have for this week.
144
00:13:14,273 --> 00:13:14,473
Wow.
145
00:13:14,573 --> 00:13:18,013
I found a real agenda with real helpful information.
146
00:13:18,573 --> 00:13:24,373
One thing, even with our city and obviously our state, when things are not public and not
147
00:13:24,373 --> 00:13:29,213
posted, it makes these meetings feel very secretive and unaccountable because they're
148
00:13:29,213 --> 00:13:34,713
spending our taxes without any real disclosure outside information and outside of that room.
149
00:13:34,873 --> 00:13:36,913
No one knows about these things other than that.
150
00:13:36,913 --> 00:13:42,573
and the news doesn't cover this because it's just not cool it's not fun it's not exciting it's very
151
00:13:42,573 --> 00:13:48,133
boring so i want to keep trying to do it more here i'd like to love to conduct like an actual
152
00:13:48,133 --> 00:13:52,153
interview with some people in this segment and make that a special episode for subscribers
153
00:13:52,153 --> 00:13:58,173
but we'll see so october 9th there is a joint committee on the state building commission
154
00:13:58,173 --> 00:14:04,933
which is pretty cool so in that agenda i have it in the show notes there's about 60 million dollars
155
00:14:04,933 --> 00:14:11,193
being spent and it's on eight projects. Uh, and it pretty confusing on some of the wording because
156
00:14:11,193 --> 00:14:16,593
some of the stuff is above and below, but East Tennessee state university is going to get their
157
00:14:16,593 --> 00:14:22,353
Buck Ridge exterior building fixed up. Uh, university of Memphis is going to get their
158
00:14:22,353 --> 00:14:28,693
athletic training academic addition added to it. The Austin P university is getting a community
159
00:14:28,693 --> 00:14:35,913
engagement and sustainability center reno renovation i guess um middle tennessee
160
00:14:35,913 --> 00:14:42,193
university mtsu is going to get a renovation to the beasley hall jackson state community college
161
00:14:42,193 --> 00:14:46,673
is going to get student center updates so they're going to fix some things up over there
162
00:14:46,673 --> 00:14:52,973
and the southwest tennessee community college is getting a theater renovation
163
00:14:52,973 --> 00:15:01,773
and the and and then the where where's oh and then the Department of Environment Conservation
164
00:15:01,773 --> 00:15:07,633
Montgomery Bell Four Mile Creek Park Campground is getting done and I know that they have actually
165
00:15:07,633 --> 00:15:12,553
closed that park as part of that as renovations so it's going on right now and then for the
166
00:15:12,553 --> 00:15:17,413
Department of Veteran Affairs the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery Gravesite improvements
167
00:15:17,413 --> 00:15:23,333
are starting. So that was pretty cool to actually see stuff. And then October 14th and 15th,
168
00:15:23,333 --> 00:15:30,233
there are some meetings for the CTLA Joint Subcommittee on Government Ops and one on
169
00:15:30,233 --> 00:15:36,633
Education and Health Joint Subcommittee. And then finally, the 15th one is the Government
170
00:15:36,633 --> 00:15:44,073
Operations Rule Review. So lots of cool information. So to our next segment, how's the
171
00:15:44,073 --> 00:15:50,153
hill what's the weather like uh so right now it's passable we did get some rain since the last
172
00:15:50,153 --> 00:15:54,693
show and actually a pretty good amount here and there and over the course of a couple days so
173
00:15:54,693 --> 00:16:02,613
our grass is still green we're still barely into the mid-high 70s with the low of 50s
174
00:16:02,613 --> 00:16:08,953
and 60s so there's not a lot of rain forecasted so we're probably going to still keep cutting our
175
00:16:08,953 --> 00:16:16,313
arts new businesses uh cornerstone financial will open up on the 14th there's still a couple slot
176
00:16:16,313 --> 00:16:24,073
slot open at buoy commons and at buoy meadows where cornerstone and papa john's is so there's
177
00:16:24,073 --> 00:16:28,753
still two slots there so there's three there when it comes to businesses make sure you check out the
178
00:16:28,753 --> 00:16:33,653
farmer's market every saturday from 8 a.m to 12 not earlier as other posts may have post at mess
179
00:16:33,653 --> 00:16:39,833
at chiropractic and Fairview fresh deli donuts for their life-changing apple fritters located
180
00:16:39,833 --> 00:16:45,113
down the road from Publix. There's so many good places to get some fresh breads and treats and
181
00:16:45,113 --> 00:16:50,853
fruits and vegetables along with beef, pork, hot sauce, fishing lures, holiday gifts, especially
182
00:16:50,853 --> 00:16:56,273
this time of year. So great way to do it. And so now we're going to add a highlight because we don't
183
00:16:56,273 --> 00:17:01,033
have that many businesses here, but brick and mortar highlights. So this week's episode will
184
00:17:01,033 --> 00:17:06,833
be to vigilance martial arts. They have a fantastic program from ages five to adults for
185
00:17:06,833 --> 00:17:12,813
taekwondo and Brazilian jujitsu. They have two locations, one in Fairview at 96 at the intersection
186
00:17:12,813 --> 00:17:18,553
of 100 across from the Lions football softball field and the other in Dixon. They do a lot more
187
00:17:18,553 --> 00:17:23,613
to teach your kids moves. They will teach them how to be better themselves as kids with a lot of life
188
00:17:23,613 --> 00:17:27,953
skills mixed in there. If you go there, you're probably going to see some people that you or
189
00:17:27,953 --> 00:17:33,993
your kids know and that's going to make it much easier for them to fit in and also have a lot of
190
00:17:33,993 --> 00:17:39,093
fun too. They currently have a back to school special right now for $75, which includes the
191
00:17:39,093 --> 00:17:45,633
first month and uniform. There aren't many spots and sports like that, that you can get into for
192
00:17:45,633 --> 00:17:50,913
that cheap to start. Our local business highlight that doesn't have like a brick and mortar store
193
00:17:50,913 --> 00:17:56,473
is Fairview Trash. They've been a lot more than a trash in this trash company in this community.
194
00:17:56,473 --> 00:17:58,993
They support almost every team school activity.
195
00:17:59,573 --> 00:18:03,453
And just all around town, we see their support and their signs up there.
196
00:18:03,573 --> 00:18:08,353
We see them when they're at the plays for the middle school, for the high school, and everything in between.
197
00:18:09,073 --> 00:18:11,953
So you'll see their yellow trash cans up and down the streets.
198
00:18:12,413 --> 00:18:18,093
They charge $35 per month for one and $45 a month for two.
199
00:18:18,513 --> 00:18:24,613
But if you prepay for the year because you know you're going to have trash, you can also save two months in fees.
200
00:18:24,613 --> 00:18:31,993
so that's pretty awesome job openings there's still a police officer opening walmart still
201
00:18:31,993 --> 00:18:38,073
has multiple positions cornerstone financial has started posting their stuff that there's a teller
202
00:18:38,073 --> 00:18:44,293
universal associate position publics need some more pharmacy techs and the pearl uh our one of
203
00:18:44,293 --> 00:18:49,933
our local retirement homes needs a housekeeper so if anyone has any job postings just please
204
00:18:49,933 --> 00:18:56,933
posted let me know we'll announce these weekly and just use the contact form on the website
205
00:18:56,933 --> 00:19:04,393
so our history nugget a historical marker on horn tavern road commemorates the horn tavern
206
00:19:04,393 --> 00:19:15,286
established around 1809 this 19th century establishment named for its distinctive sign featuring painted animal horns served as a gathering place during Fairview formative years
207
00:19:15,726 --> 00:19:21,586
The marker highlights the tavern's role in the area's development and its importance to locals and travelers.
208
00:19:22,346 --> 00:19:23,846
So kind of a cool little thing there.
209
00:19:24,266 --> 00:19:25,686
So upcoming events.
210
00:19:25,846 --> 00:19:30,166
First, we've got a recap with some of the armed forces having their birthday this year.
211
00:19:30,546 --> 00:19:32,386
And they'll have a couple next year, too.
212
00:19:32,386 --> 00:19:40,346
I wanted to backdate these because we support our veterans and all they and their families have sacrificed so that we could be in this great country.
213
00:19:40,466 --> 00:19:43,786
So the Army's 250th birthday was on June 14th.
214
00:19:43,786 --> 00:19:49,586
There was that big parade in Washington, D.C., which was the first time that's happened in, I think, like 80 years.
215
00:19:49,686 --> 00:19:50,366
So that was pretty cool.
216
00:19:51,186 --> 00:19:56,386
Coast Guard had their 235th birthday this year on August 4th.
217
00:19:57,166 --> 00:20:01,386
And the Air Force had its 78th birthday this year on September 18th.
218
00:20:01,386 --> 00:20:06,746
18th. So down the holler this last weekend, the Banana Puddin Festival rocked out and had a great
219
00:20:06,746 --> 00:20:11,386
turnout because it was some good weather and some good pudding. So if you missed out this year,
220
00:20:11,426 --> 00:20:17,426
you can always make it up next year because it's a real life changer. And the high school,
221
00:20:17,606 --> 00:20:23,566
they had their homecoming parade on October 3rd, and it was so great to see all the floats,
222
00:20:23,766 --> 00:20:29,326
designs, and decorations in the kids throughout the city. First Bank definitely wins with no one
223
00:20:29,326 --> 00:20:35,206
really even a second place decorating compared to what they did. The city posted some of the
224
00:20:35,206 --> 00:20:40,006
photos on their page on the floats on their Facebook. And in case you missed your kid,
225
00:20:40,006 --> 00:20:45,786
and we also have the pictures that we took from Food Saver of every single float on there. So
226
00:20:45,786 --> 00:20:49,446
go check us out on Facebook. It's probably the easiest way to do it. And there's a link
227
00:20:49,446 --> 00:20:55,186
inside the show notes. In Birtwood, we talked about it last week too. Vet Fest was on October
228
00:20:55,186 --> 00:21:00,626
4th. This went great. Lots of people, lots of great turnout. Thanks to the Marine Corps League
229
00:21:00,626 --> 00:21:05,766
for being out there and supporting our veterans along with Quilts of Valor and so many other
230
00:21:05,766 --> 00:21:11,606
great organizations there. This is a great time for veterans to connect. So some of the new events
231
00:21:11,606 --> 00:21:16,426
that are coming up right now, we're past recap, is the pancake breakfast at the Masonic Lodge
232
00:21:16,426 --> 00:21:21,286
this Saturday on the 11th from 8 to 10-ish. It's a couple dollars for some pancakes and
233
00:21:21,286 --> 00:21:27,606
bacon and this supports fairview masonic lodge and this is on buoy lake road city all city has
234
00:21:27,606 --> 00:21:32,606
the fall fun day which is the touch truck food and games at buoy nature park on october 11th
235
00:21:33,286 --> 00:21:41,046
october 13th is the navy's birthday uh 250th birthday there truck retreat at buoy is october
236
00:21:41,046 --> 00:21:48,386
25th from 4 to 6 p.m so you can get more candy uh city and movie in the park is october 25th at
237
00:21:48,386 --> 00:21:54,046
6 p.m. Still haven't seen what movie it is yet. Maybe it's just a surprise. Dixon coming up. The
238
00:21:54,046 --> 00:22:01,706
Veteran Parade will be held on Sunday, November 9th. Downtown Dixon starts at 10 a.m. And around
239
00:22:01,706 --> 00:22:08,286
the country, the Marine Corps birthday is November 10th, 2025. And that's their 250th birthday. So
240
00:22:08,286 --> 00:22:12,226
we've got a couple people turning 250 years old when it comes to the branches of service,
241
00:22:12,226 --> 00:22:18,846
which is pretty cool. And then if you want to go, the Veterans Day Parade in Franklin is November
242
00:22:18,846 --> 00:22:25,266
11th at 11 a.m. Good timing. The city has their Christmas tree lighting on December 5th at 5 p.m.
243
00:22:25,266 --> 00:22:31,806
and the Christmas Parade December 6th at 10 a.m. The next sets of meetings is the Planning
244
00:22:31,806 --> 00:22:39,186
Commission will be on October 14th at 7 p.m. There's no agenda posted. The Board of Commissioners
245
00:22:39,186 --> 00:22:43,986
will meet on October 16th. No agenda posted. And the Board of Commissioners Town Hall, that's your
246
00:22:43,986 --> 00:22:50,706
chance to speak on October 28th. And they moved this because of football on the 10-2 meeting. So
247
00:22:50,706 --> 00:22:55,386
that's pretty cool. We also posted a lot of stuff in our community calendar, and we also put the
248
00:22:55,386 --> 00:23:00,226
links of all those community links in there. So if you want to know what's going on in your school
249
00:23:00,226 --> 00:23:05,786
and the county, this is a great way to do it. For the kids, there's still numerous options in
250
00:23:05,786 --> 00:23:11,986
fairview to keep your kids involved in activities and sports there's a thriving girl scout and boy
251
00:23:11,986 --> 00:23:16,986
scout program and scouts bsa program here in fairview there's many recreation and travel teams
252
00:23:16,986 --> 00:23:23,946
there's la la dance studios and elevate gymnastics and cheer there's also a taekwondo and jujitsu
253
00:23:23,946 --> 00:23:29,686
place vigilance martial arts which we've talked about before the youth jacket wrestling program
254
00:23:29,686 --> 00:23:37,586
Jackets Youth Wrestling has an open gym night on October 10th from 3.30 to 5 p.m. at Elevate Cheer and Gym.
255
00:23:38,046 --> 00:23:43,466
So this is a great opportunity for your kids to go check out this program and explore what's going on.
256
00:23:43,626 --> 00:23:47,766
The wrestling program that we have here in Fairview is kind of bar from none.
257
00:23:48,246 --> 00:23:55,146
We have had a lot of state champions that started off at the kindergarten kind of peewee leagues and going all the way through high school.
258
00:23:55,146 --> 00:24:01,506
So it's a great time to go over there and support both of those businesses and options at the same time.
259
00:24:02,126 --> 00:24:05,546
School news. So, you know, Hawk and Tiger news.
260
00:24:05,686 --> 00:24:11,366
We still need your help. If you could write a weekly note that we could read or get onto the newsletter list.
261
00:24:11,766 --> 00:24:14,686
The Hawk Walk on October 3rd apparently went good.
262
00:24:15,166 --> 00:24:20,146
So that's always nice. The Fairview Elementary has their track or treat on October 16th.
263
00:24:20,146 --> 00:24:26,386
16th and Westwood has its tent or treat on October 23rd. Just like we talked about last time,
264
00:24:26,386 --> 00:24:31,626
plus some of the churches, you've got at least four to five opportunities in our little town to
265
00:24:31,626 --> 00:24:38,506
go get candy and dress up with your kids before game day on the 31st. So on Falcon news, there's
266
00:24:38,506 --> 00:24:43,806
no newsletter this week since they are closed for fall breaks. I only have what they included before.
267
00:24:44,386 --> 00:24:49,266
So they're still working on running some classroom supplies fundraisers. 4-H is still having its
268
00:24:49,266 --> 00:24:55,206
parents meeting on October 13th. The glow dance is scheduled for October 17th. And you can save
269
00:24:55,206 --> 00:25:00,406
money by purchasing those tickets in advance. October 21st is this winter sports picture day.
270
00:25:00,406 --> 00:25:06,766
And February 11th is a spring picture day. October 13th, Scouts BSA will be at lunch talking about
271
00:25:06,766 --> 00:25:14,186
scouting. October 25th is the Halloween concert and fundraiser. And Treat a Boo is on again this
272
00:25:14,186 --> 00:25:19,906
Halloween where you can send a drink or candy bag to your kid or faculty member of choice.
273
00:25:20,486 --> 00:25:26,586
So it's always a fun one. In our jacket news, homecoming parade was epic. Just like we talked
274
00:25:26,586 --> 00:25:31,006
about before, decorations and the teams and seeing everybody were rocking it. Traffic seemed to
275
00:25:31,006 --> 00:25:35,446
actually do okay. They actually were moving a couple miles an hour, so it didn't really
276
00:25:35,446 --> 00:25:40,086
lock the city down as much as I thought it was going to. It was great to see how many people
277
00:25:40,086 --> 00:25:45,166
came out and support our students. Those students are the closest to becoming the next generation of
278
00:25:45,166 --> 00:25:50,146
leaders and our support is critical to their futures. So thank everyone for coming out to there.
279
00:25:51,046 --> 00:25:55,606
There's also no newsletter here. So we'll just pick it up here. The pumpkin patch is still
280
00:25:55,606 --> 00:26:01,886
rocking over at Apex Bank. It goes till October 31st, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. This helps run
281
00:26:01,886 --> 00:26:07,946
fund money for the FHS athletic committee and upcoming activities. The fall market is on November
282
00:26:07,946 --> 00:26:12,766
15th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a great place to do some Christmas shopping,
283
00:26:12,886 --> 00:26:18,306
just like our farmer's market, to help support local businesses. The art club is starting soon,
284
00:26:18,306 --> 00:26:23,966
so please turn in your forms. Soctober starts with the NHS and Beta Club, who are collecting
285
00:26:23,966 --> 00:26:29,266
socks for GraceWorks from now until October 24th. Just like we mentioned before, the Spanish Honor
286
00:26:29,266 --> 00:26:36,326
Society is still rocking if your kid has a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The PSAT will be administered
287
00:26:36,326 --> 00:26:41,586
October 23rd and now every Friday Kona Ice and Tom's Coffee will be there at lunchtime.
288
00:26:42,286 --> 00:26:46,826
So you need to do more than just fill their lunch account to be able to have some of that.
289
00:26:47,386 --> 00:26:54,386
Senior portraits and senior ads are due November 21st through 25th. So if you want to get those
290
00:26:54,386 --> 00:26:59,466
funny and embarrassing or you know moving messages into the yearbook for your kids
291
00:26:59,466 --> 00:27:07,306
then make sure you get that. October 18th is also the ACT test. If you want that,
292
00:27:07,386 --> 00:27:13,766
you just register on ACT.org. And October 21st is the ACT for seniors. And there's also some
293
00:27:13,766 --> 00:27:20,806
fundraiser stuff still going on. Right now, when it comes to school schedule, we're still on fall
294
00:27:20,806 --> 00:27:26,306
break until October 13th. And then no school on October 31st, which is the first time I think
295
00:27:26,306 --> 00:27:34,286
this has ever happened, which is kind of cool. So it'll be nice. Faith moment. This is a part of a
296
00:27:34,286 --> 00:27:41,446
one church home sermon from Pastor Ian Gilchrist from First Peter on Standing Firm Together.
297
00:27:41,906 --> 00:27:47,686
This talking talks about walking in submission to life and how things are and can and will be.
298
00:27:48,166 --> 00:27:52,966
It also discusses marriage and the roles outlined in the Bible and how these translate to the real
299
00:27:52,966 --> 00:27:59,146
world. It's a good one. So here we go. That the body of Christ is not just something to attend
300
00:27:59,146 --> 00:28:06,746
on a Sunday. It's a life together that infects every day of our life. He calls us to living in
301
00:28:06,746 --> 00:28:12,806
submission under pressure. I mean, think about that. He's calling us, he's calling them to live
302
00:28:12,806 --> 00:28:14,546
in submission to leadership
303
00:28:14,546 --> 00:28:17,566
that wants to destroy them.
304
00:28:18,286 --> 00:28:18,666
Why?
305
00:28:19,926 --> 00:28:23,226
He says, because God is over all of it.
306
00:28:23,946 --> 00:28:25,666
God is actually in control.
307
00:28:26,046 --> 00:28:27,206
And so I've put you in this life.
308
00:28:27,366 --> 00:28:29,166
There's going to be things that come your way
309
00:28:29,166 --> 00:28:31,566
when you submit to the leadership,
310
00:28:31,786 --> 00:28:33,366
submit to even the government,
311
00:28:33,686 --> 00:28:35,146
even the corruption of government.
312
00:28:35,146 --> 00:28:37,906
There's times that I need to walk in submission to that.
313
00:28:38,806 --> 00:28:40,826
That's the way God's made us.
314
00:28:40,826 --> 00:28:52,819
He goes in and he starts talking from huge relationships like our relationship with government to then he talks about marriages and the most intimate relationships He raises the standard again
315
00:28:52,919 --> 00:28:57,799
He says, listen, marriage isn't just about having cool photos to put on Instagram.
316
00:28:58,339 --> 00:29:04,419
Marriage is about husbands dying for their wife and wives submitting to their husbands.
317
00:29:04,419 --> 00:29:13,159
and again what that means isn't some domineering hierarchy of value it's absolutely a design an
318
00:29:13,159 --> 00:29:18,779
eternal kingdom design that he says when when you two live like this you're going to walk as co-heirs
319
00:29:18,779 --> 00:29:25,899
together men cherishing their wives not lording over their wives wives submitting to your husbands
320
00:29:25,899 --> 00:29:32,379
not domineering them there's there's something so beautiful about the biblical picture of marriage
321
00:29:32,379 --> 00:29:35,439
Co-laboring together
322
00:29:35,439 --> 00:29:38,159
And he continues talking about
323
00:29:38,159 --> 00:29:40,199
Life together with one another
324
00:29:40,199 --> 00:29:41,359
He talks about
325
00:29:41,359 --> 00:29:44,059
In week 6
326
00:29:44,059 --> 00:29:45,879
We talked about suffering
327
00:29:45,879 --> 00:29:47,979
It's the theme of this whole book
328
00:29:47,979 --> 00:29:49,839
It seems like
329
00:29:49,839 --> 00:29:51,879
This idea of suffering
330
00:29:51,879 --> 00:29:52,379
Again
331
00:29:52,379 --> 00:29:56,279
Not demeaning or talking down
332
00:29:56,279 --> 00:29:58,059
Or lessening
333
00:29:58,059 --> 00:29:59,779
Hard times that we go through in life
334
00:29:59,779 --> 00:30:01,859
There are hard things we all go through
335
00:30:02,419 --> 00:30:04,479
There are hard times that we have gone through,
336
00:30:04,559 --> 00:30:06,799
and there's hard things we're going to go through in the future.
337
00:30:07,239 --> 00:30:09,539
There's what the Scripture says is afflictions.
338
00:30:09,819 --> 00:30:10,859
There's pain.
339
00:30:11,239 --> 00:30:12,299
There's heartache.
340
00:30:12,299 --> 00:30:16,799
There's just unjust things that happen in the world that don't make any sense.
341
00:30:17,199 --> 00:30:19,079
But he, when he's talking about suffering,
342
00:30:19,359 --> 00:30:23,179
is uniquely tying it to persecution we face,
343
00:30:23,659 --> 00:30:25,679
to things we lose,
344
00:30:26,759 --> 00:30:29,439
to hardship we endure,
345
00:30:29,439 --> 00:30:33,759
as a result of us following Jesus.
346
00:30:34,399 --> 00:30:37,079
So suffering is unique in 1 Peter
347
00:30:37,079 --> 00:30:39,959
that he's saying suffering is reserved
348
00:30:39,959 --> 00:30:43,439
to when I've lost something.
349
00:30:43,559 --> 00:30:44,859
I've lost an opportunity.
350
00:30:45,039 --> 00:30:47,139
I've lost financially, physically, emotionally.
351
00:30:47,439 --> 00:30:51,359
I've lost something because I said yes to living holy.
352
00:30:52,159 --> 00:30:54,539
So it's a unique way to think about suffering.
353
00:30:54,999 --> 00:30:59,179
And in that way, it's actually interesting
354
00:30:59,179 --> 00:31:03,359
because we find ourselves so insulated and comfortable in life,
355
00:31:03,419 --> 00:31:05,359
in our society, in our culture, in the South,
356
00:31:05,599 --> 00:31:08,439
that it's hard actually to suffer.
357
00:31:09,339 --> 00:31:12,899
Like I said, when's the last time that you endured persecution
358
00:31:12,899 --> 00:31:16,399
because of something you were doing for the purpose of righteousness?
359
00:31:17,839 --> 00:31:19,899
It's like, well...
360
00:31:22,619 --> 00:31:23,899
There was...
361
00:31:23,899 --> 00:31:27,999
I was in line. No, that's not it.
362
00:31:29,179 --> 00:31:35,019
it's interesting, but yet, as we're going to hear today, as we close this book,
363
00:31:35,799 --> 00:31:38,679
it is actually the very thing that when we find ourselves going,
364
00:31:38,739 --> 00:31:41,939
hey, I'm not going to try to avoid suffering.
365
00:31:42,079 --> 00:31:44,059
I'm not going to try to run away from suffering.
366
00:31:44,319 --> 00:31:48,739
Again, I'm not saying run in and just find yourself in a bad situation,
367
00:31:48,739 --> 00:31:53,299
but living in a way that is defiant to the world
368
00:31:53,299 --> 00:31:56,559
for the purpose of living holy and righteously before God.
369
00:31:56,559 --> 00:32:03,699
When we find ourselves there, right, again, as a businessman, hey, I'm going to decide I'm not doing that deal,
370
00:32:03,759 --> 00:32:05,459
even though it's going to cost me something.
371
00:32:05,559 --> 00:32:08,219
And people go, well, if you don't, then somebody else will.
372
00:32:08,299 --> 00:32:08,739
You're fired.
373
00:32:09,219 --> 00:32:10,319
That's suffering.
374
00:32:11,419 --> 00:32:14,619
Students going, hey, I know everybody's doing that.
375
00:32:14,679 --> 00:32:17,419
I know everybody says it's not that big a deal.
376
00:32:17,479 --> 00:32:18,859
I know it seems fine.
377
00:32:19,099 --> 00:32:20,519
I'm not going there.
378
00:32:20,579 --> 00:32:21,479
I'm not saying that.
379
00:32:21,539 --> 00:32:22,359
I'm not watching that.
380
00:32:22,399 --> 00:32:23,199
I'm not using that.
381
00:32:23,199 --> 00:32:27,719
I'm not going to act like that because God has called me to live to a higher standard,
382
00:32:27,819 --> 00:32:29,939
a standard of holiness and righteousness.
383
00:32:30,119 --> 00:32:34,239
And you might think I'm a Jesus freak or a weirdo, but I'm following him.
384
00:32:34,379 --> 00:32:39,099
So even if you don't want me to be around you, I'm trusting him with everything I have.
385
00:32:39,739 --> 00:32:41,579
And they go, well, you know what?
386
00:32:41,759 --> 00:32:45,219
Like, we want that story to end with, oh, man, no, it's good.
387
00:32:45,279 --> 00:32:46,959
Let's all go to a worship night together.
388
00:32:47,039 --> 00:32:51,379
But what it's more likely going to look like is, fine, dude, see you later.
389
00:32:51,379 --> 00:32:54,019
Jesus says that thing right there
390
00:32:54,019 --> 00:32:56,619
that moment, that pain of loss
391
00:32:56,619 --> 00:32:58,459
that's suffering
392
00:32:58,459 --> 00:33:00,399
and that's a suffering
393
00:33:00,399 --> 00:33:03,459
that should be rejoiced over
394
00:33:03,459 --> 00:33:07,579
and he goes on and he calls us to live with
395
00:33:07,579 --> 00:33:10,579
an urgency and a love that's deep
396
00:33:10,579 --> 00:33:12,919
a love that covers one another
397
00:33:12,919 --> 00:33:17,439
love in the body of Christ that stretches us
398
00:33:17,439 --> 00:33:20,899
that causes us to see each other
399
00:33:20,899 --> 00:33:27,119
with compassion that causes us to see each other and say, hey, I see your shortcomings. And while I
400
00:33:27,119 --> 00:33:31,979
don't want you to stay in it forever, I want to walk with you toward healing instead of just sitting
401
00:33:31,979 --> 00:33:39,459
back and saying, look at how bad they are. Thank God I'm not like them. There's this call that if
402
00:33:39,459 --> 00:33:44,959
we want to gain clarity, if we want to have clarity as we navigate the chaos of the world we're living
403
00:33:44,959 --> 00:33:51,479
in, that we're going to have to decide to live in accordance with his word as opposed
404
00:33:51,479 --> 00:33:53,579
to the ways of the world.
405
00:33:53,639 --> 00:33:59,199
And that takes us all the way to chapter 5, 14 verses to close the day.
406
00:33:59,339 --> 00:34:02,759
It reads like this, the elders who are among you, I exhort.
407
00:34:05,179 --> 00:34:11,179
I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ and also a partaker of
408
00:34:11,179 --> 00:34:12,799
the glory that will be revealed.
409
00:34:12,799 --> 00:34:16,619
shepherd the flock of God which is among you
410
00:34:16,619 --> 00:34:19,279
serving as overseers not by compulsion
411
00:34:19,279 --> 00:34:20,659
but willingly
412
00:34:20,659 --> 00:34:23,879
not for dishonest gain but eagerly
413
00:34:23,879 --> 00:34:27,279
not as being lords over those entrusted to you
414
00:34:27,279 --> 00:34:29,519
but being examples to the flock
415
00:34:29,519 --> 00:34:32,079
and when the chief shepherd appears
416
00:34:32,079 --> 00:34:34,039
you will receive the crown of glory
417
00:34:34,039 --> 00:34:35,759
that does not fade away
418
00:34:35,759 --> 00:34:37,959
likewise younger people
419
00:34:37,959 --> 00:34:39,819
submit yourself to your elders
420
00:34:39,819 --> 00:34:48,799
Yes, all of you be submissive to one another and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
421
00:34:49,759 --> 00:34:59,659
Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God that he might exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon him, for he cares for you.
422
00:35:00,399 --> 00:35:00,959
Be sober.
423
00:35:01,679 --> 00:35:02,259
Be vigilant.
424
00:35:02,939 --> 00:35:07,899
Because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.
425
00:35:08,619 --> 00:35:09,479
Resist him.
426
00:35:09,819 --> 00:35:16,459
steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
427
00:35:17,519 --> 00:35:22,759
But may the God of all grace, who called us in his eternal glory by Christ Jesus,
428
00:35:22,939 --> 00:35:29,179
after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
429
00:35:29,699 --> 00:35:32,739
To him be the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
430
00:35:33,539 --> 00:35:37,299
By Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I considered him,
431
00:35:37,299 --> 00:35:44,859
I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in you, in which you stand.
432
00:35:45,779 --> 00:35:50,159
She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greet you, and so does Mark, my son.
433
00:35:50,739 --> 00:35:52,279
Greet one another with a kiss of love.
434
00:35:52,739 --> 00:35:54,799
Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus.
435
00:35:55,719 --> 00:35:55,999
Amen.
436
00:35:56,839 --> 00:36:01,239
