EP: 11 "Thanksgiving"

This is the Fairview, TN News from Nov 19-26th 2025.

Welcome to this Thanksgiving Episode 11 of Hello Fairview, your local podcast made right here in Fairview, for people in Fairview and the surrounding areas.  This is a weekly show, released every Wednesday, featuring stories that aim to inform and inspire.  Local Radio stations don’t exist in small towns like ours, so we will use Hello Fairview to fill that void with news related to Fairview.  This is a Value for Value podcast, which means you contribute what you can based on the value you receive.  This concept was founded by the PodFather himself, Adam Curry, and his Co-host, John C. Dvorak of the No Agenda Show, over 18 years ago.

Currently, this is a one-man operation, so if you have any ideas, events, business opportunities, or job openings, please don't hesitate to let me know.  You are a producer of this show; you are not the product, because your time and attention are not being sold to advertisers for value.  Some shows will be longer, others shorter, but I will do my best to keep things relevant.

Traffic Time

Normal Busy, where you can wait 2-5 minutes to make a left in the morning and the afternoon.  Cumberland, and 100 is still getting some regular work. They are still working to build culverts on the East- and westbound sides to widen the road, along with some mini-bridges.  We are less than one year out from it being done.

Redlight Update – We currently still have three (Old Cox, Publix, & Walmart). Still, we will soon be getting one at the new City Center Entrance and at the Cumberland and 100 intersection when that expansion occurs. I’m not sure how it will help or hurt yet, but I hope the crossing guard can control it during the morning and evening school rush.

City Center – There will still be some construction closures here and there.

Commissioner Update – The Health Department, which is open across from the Elementary school and has recently been renovated, is ready to help.  They have a stock of vaccines if needed, as well as other medical services. Please go and check them out.

The Fairview Police Department Shop with A Cop is wrapping up.  Thanks to MJ & Sons Towing for their generous donation.

City Blanket Drive – This was the first post I saw about it, but it’s been going on since last week on the 7th and will run until the 24th at City Hall, where they are accepting only new blankets to be given to residents.

Christmas Trees – There will be some at Meseck Chiropractic for the Scouts BSA Troop 297 here in Fairview.  Then there will also be Christmas Trees at Farm Fresh Vintage.  There may also be some others, but I will be on the lookout.  Black Friday is the best day to get them if you have time.

Special Elections Early Voting has Started – Please go and vote at the Fairview Recreation Center from November 19th through the 26th, from 8AM-6PM Weekdays, and on Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM, with November 26th closing early at Noon!

            1. Passed 5-0
            2. Commissioner Hall - talked about some of the speeding problems on this road and the ways to help slow things down, and this was proposed back then.
            3. There was a note that one of the first crashes one of the neighbors could remember in his 50 years there. Talked about the measurements that were taken for the sight distance minimums for 30mph.  There would be two stop signs ahead, and two stop signs ahead.
            4. Commissioner Roberts – This isn’t about traffic calming, but just about safety for people to get in and out of their driveways.
          2. New Business
            1. (Added this Meeting with a Vote (5-0)) Quick Claim Deed on the Park Property on Hwy 96)
              1. There is a property the Lions Club donated to the City back in 1996, and there is now a desire to return it to the Fairview Recreation Association Board. Ricky Jones, our county commissioner, and County Mayor Rogers Anderson will sponsor the resolution for this action.
              2. Commissioner Bufalini – Continue to have the FRA operated by them, and they could make amendments and structure some of the financial requirements and operational matters. FRA would be able to retain the funds it raises to reinvest in the facility.
              3. Mayor Anderson – That sounds like a lot of responsibility for the City, and this Quick Claim Deed would be prepared only by the City and County attorneys, and FRA will get a $ 1 lease from the City. Attorneys will have to be involved.  This is very preliminary and will require more steps.  150,000 dollars would be owed to the county for the county-installed lights.
              4. Commissioner McDonald – I would like to know the property's price, operating costs, insurance costs, and the project timeline.
              5. President of the FRA – Thank you for all you have done. As a board, we don’t have control over what happens.  There are a couple of points. There is a facility-use agreement with the county, under which they pay $10 per player. The county handles trash collection and maintenance.  The FRA is responsible for preparing the field of play for the games.  There will be some changes in who they can work with, and they hope there isn’t any extra financial burden to keep doing what they are doing.   54k dollars per year to operate the parage is the fee the county talked about, and the FRA couldn’t financially take on that burden.  Sitting with a balance of 131k in their bank because of a lot of hard work and that 54k is more than they get in a season with all the current fees and they would have to supplement with other revenue streams.  There was talk about donations and other things, and they want to continue.  But there are a couple of financial things that have to be figured out.  The county has matched with the FRA in the past, but they are not sure whether anything is possible.  There is a January meeting that will dive into some of the details.
                1. Mayor Anderson – Asked if the rest of the board agreed with these thoughts. My intent for tonight was just to open the discussion to the county. People have asked whether we could make this a city park, and we are just starting the discussion.
                  1. Not sure if there is what everyone thinks, but he believes the boards.
                  2. There isn’t really anything for the kids if the county or city operates and owns it. They don’t have enough money for the 150k bond.
                2. Commissioner McDonald – Asked about the bond and the total costs. He has concerns about how the County can match funds and what that means for the city and the funds.  Talked about if costs go up for this park, then the registration and game costs will have to go up to raise that money. Spoke about the insurance costs and who pays for that.  He wants to be cautious about understanding the burden of all things.  Mayor – What is the next steps?  Can we get a vote to have the planning team look into this?
                  1. Spring Baseball/Softball – They see 30-40k in gross per year, but not enough money to do everything.
                  2. Who owns it doesn’t matter as long as it helps the kids in our area.
                  3. Not sure of the insurance costs.
                3. Commissioner Roberts – This was a surprise, and she doesn’t have enough information to make any decisions. What is the tax burden?  What revenue is raised there?  Why did this property get turned over anyway?  Is this a good investment for the city, and what could it also be used for, based on the land not in use?  Wanting to know if we have enough time and effort to take this on, because this wasn’t on the agenda for the next year that she has seen.  150k for 30 acres sounds like a great deal, but what are the thoughts on the actual impact of the city?  We have lots of questions, and I want to know more.  If there is just a way to handle economic availability, we can do that without taking away their time from other assigned tasks, which could be good before we know if it would even be possible.
                4. Commission Hall – He doesn’t know the origin story either, and he asked about the property on the backside of the fields. What does the county think about this?
                  1. FRA board member said they are fine with whatever.
                5. City Manager - There isn’t enough information yet, and no official comment.
                6. City Planner – Echoes the City Manager, that more research is needed. The following steps would be for staff to research and work with the City Manager on what to do, conduct cost and environmental impact studies to understand what we could do, and follow the standard procedures for any property acquisition.  Mayor Anderson asked about how improvements are approved and what that would look like with the City and County.  Greer responded that there have been some unpermitted property improvements.
                  1. That is, the Lions Club owns that other piece of property.
                7. City Attorney – This should have been just a discussion, but we are going deeper. There isn’t a tax because this is governmental property.  There is supposed to be a process for the county planning commission to request improvements, and there is a process.  Make a vote to get the staff to look into things, and we can have a planning meeting in the future.  Send out these emails to people.
              6. Resolution 60-25. A Resolution authorizing the City of Fairview Fire Department to participate in the James L. Richardson "Driver Training" matching grant program. (Fire Chief) https://play.champds.com/ATT/fairviewtn/2025-11/ac3747ea1cbf945baaa6a180fccde3908f5b74c3.pdf
                1. Passed 5-0
                2. This grant covers services related to driving training.
              7. Discussion
                1. Parks and Landscape Board Action Items (Commissioner Roberts)
                  1. Commissioner Roberts – We talked about this last meeting about what we can do to help the Parks and Landscape Board, and maybe some things we could help sponsor. Talked about some of the ideas.  I attended a meeting this summer, and the team is great.  What projects have you done so we know what to do?    How can we turn a task into action so the P&L board can do something?  We believe that is why things haven’t started, because of not knowing how to connect things.  In summation, we need to add this to the once-a-quarter meeting to discuss topics related to Parks and Landscape.  What would we do with the board then?
                  2. Veterans Park
                    1. A Pier, Sidewalk, Pavers for the Flag Pole (Engraved as a possible Fundraiser), and finish up the basketball goal.
                  3. Bowie Park
                    1. Trail Erosion Work, Shade Trees around the playground, no-smoking signs, Digital Display at the front entry to replace the current sign, increased parking by the playground, and restriping the nature center parking lot.
                  4. Commissioner Buflaini – The Chair is here if he would like to comment on anything. He did send an email with August 5th for us to review, so that may be a good starting point, and that’s what Commissioner Roberts talked about.  Maybe take that list and prioritize them.
                  5. Mr. Dodoro (Doe Door Oh) – This board is unique since we are under BoC meetings. We have been using social media and word of mouth to find things to do, and this board can do the same.  This is where, if the other property comes on board from the ball field, there could be possibilities, but many of them still need the BoC's approval.  They have to sit back and wait for tasks, but if they have some things they can research and do, they can.  We cancel around half of the meetings because there’s no new business.  We are ready to go, but just waiting on the BoC.  That list was made from the board and not just for me.
                    1. They did a big push for the Playground Rebuild Committee to research the design, ideas, and costs. There hasn’t been anything given to us from the BoC, but they have done some minor things at Veterans Park.  The board was officially approved last year.
                    2. I understand the limitations of what the park board can and cannot do. We are just a group of volunteers watching for things, and we reach out when stuff comes up. They do what they are asked,
                  6. Commissioner Hall – Asked about when the board was founded. We have seen other boards do great things for the city, and how they have worked with City staff and others to get things done that come up.
                  7. Commissioner McDonald – Could you all work on a list of things and projects that we enjoy but don’t know about? Make a wish list, including some easy things too.  Doesn’t see a problem with that board saying we have identified a possible need and can authorize them. I would like you to be able to drive things as your own board.
                  8. City Manager – I try to stay out of these types of things. Ordinance 2024-07 created this.  I would recommend that BoC review that, along with the Bylaws, and discuss the Citizens Advisory Board part of this in some meetings.  They don’t want to do double the work, and they’re not sure how it will work together.  We need to reassess this parks and landscape committee, why the BoC would reach out to our staff instead of the board, and we could work better to make things happen more easily.  There are conflicts with what the City Landscaping team is doing and what the City is doing outside of this Citizen Advisory Board for the Parks and Landscape Board, and I don’t see the value.    I would recommend that we make sense to you all, along with the current team, on what to do, because this isn’t working right now.
                2. Discussion
                  1. Adding the Outparcel to the Land Trust (Commissioner Roberts)
                    1. Raising this because it hasn’t been talked about in a while
                    2. Commissioner McDonald – That piece of property is protected by this BoC, but it could be another group of people who would need to change things. Not putting it in the trust leaves the board with some options, and this property is very sensitive.  I don’t see a need for the change because it’s protected now.
                    3. Commissioner Roberts – Will take some of her things back. Doesn’t think that putting it in a land trust will limit everything possible, but this could have some benefits for its ecology.  The proposed Ag Center would bring a lot of traffic, and she would like to see it more like Bowie than something else.  As the city continues to develop, this should be protected.
                    4. Commissioner Bufalini – Some of the things a couple of months ago related to the property to be an agricultural center, and building it with some grants. Horse riding arena to help generate some revenue.  Don’t like what the property is used for right now, but wants it to be used.  A garden or Compost center could be another couple of options to explore.
                    5. Round Table
                      1. Commissioner Hall – Thanks to everyone for all they do.
                      2. Commissioner McDonald – Great discussion with everyone and the FRA members. Happy Thanksgiving.  The Super Bowl is going down this weekend with Burns and Fairview, both undefeated.  It will be a great game at 3 pm at Charlotte Middle School.
                      3. Commissioner Roberts – Thanks to everyone, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
                      4. Commissioner Bufalini – Thanks to everyone. Thanks to the Natchez Green House program, and how he found out that it wasn’t overgrown, it was art and science.  Thanks to the speakers at the Planning Commission related to the Richvale building issues.  If you have issues, please reach out to us; we will listen and do what we can.  District 7 voting is going on right now, so make sure to vote to replace Mark Green’s seat.
                      5. Mayor Anderson – Excited for this game too. Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.  Thank you to the Natchez Green Program for helping our kids and community.  Getting our kids away from keyboards is a great thing.    Thank you all, and help keep Fairview Clean.

The State of TN

  1. Early Voting is over this week, and December 2 will be the final special election for the 7th District US House Seat, with Aftyn Behn for the Democrats and Matt Van Epps for the Republicans, based on the primary results. Turnout is still down from multiple sources, so that it could be interesting.
  2. Jeff Long of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDSOHS) and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Colonel Matt Perry joined multiple law enforcement partners to announce the “Tennessee Safe Thanksgiving Travel Challenge Initiative.” “ Don’t Speed and Be Safe” is the gist of that story.
  3. Former House Speaker Glen Casada and his ex-chief of staff are facing corruption charges, and the U.S. Department of Justice requested their convictions and prison orders be vacated after they received a presidential pardon.
  4. The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) announced today that more than 67,000 high school seniors applied for Tennessee Promise ahead of the November deadline, maintaining strong statewide momentum for one of the nation’s most successful college access programs.
  5. Construction on the Music City Loop has stopped after one of the contractors reported they haven’t been paid for an agreed-upon milestone. There has been more talk about more stops, and there may be a public hearing with the Metro Council.

The Bills

Nothing is going on for the next couple of weeks, it appears.

How’s the hill, weather report

Back to it, How’s the hill?  Passable. Clear and getting colder soon.  The weather guessers are predicting highs in the 40s, with lows in the 20s starting this week.  Maybe we are heading into Fall finally?

New Businesses

Nothing New was spotted.  Ace Hardware is still brewing.  They have made a lot of progress outside.  Other than that, I spotted nothing new this week, and I'm waiting to see what else is coming.  There are still a couple of properties for sale around the area.

Farmers Market

Make sure to head to the Farmers Market every Saturday Morning, 8 AM to 12 PM (Not Earlier, as other posts have posted) at Meseck Chiropractor and Fairview Fresh Deli for their life-changing Apple Fritters, located down the road from Publix.  There are so many good places to get local beef and pork, breads and treats, local fruits and vegetables, along with some hot sauce, fishing lures, and other holiday gifts this time of the year.

Brick and Mortar Highlight

Snappy's Pizza

They have been here for over 17 years, and they have some amazing pizza, but they also have a heart for the city, and you will see them around sponsoring or supporting teams and non-profits.  Make sure to check them out at Publix, and you may also get some Strawberry, Lemon, or Chocolate cake at the checkout counter.  You can dine inside or get carry-out.  Their cinnamon sticks are pretty epic in the world of dessert pizza.

History Nugget

The term Thanksgiving was brandished throughout US history and officially codified by Lincoln in 1863 at the behest of an activist/writer named Sara Hale. Before 1863 there was no Thanksgiving per se, but a lot of proclamations giving thanks for this and that, all called Thanksgiving. There were virtually no Thanksgiving events from the Thomas Jefferson administration until Sara revitalized the dying idea. Her rationale was that Americans didn’t have enough holidays. The Lincoln Thanksgiving was justified as a celebration of the North’s victory in winning the battle of Gettysburg and had absolutely nothing to do with Pilgrims or anything of the sort. Even the first supposed ‘Thanksgiving’ in 1621 was a three-day one-shot party modeled after something called Harvest Home. It wasn’t called Thanksgiving. Harvest Home was an end-of-the-harvest party celebrated in parts of the British Isles. This party didn’t happen again, and, in fact, [as cited here], most of the invited Indian guests to the 1621 event were later butchered by the growing population of settlers.

One documented ‘Thanksgiving” [cited here] was for a one-shot celebration to be held on June 20th. In 1676, Thanksgiving was used more as a generic term for taking an ad-libbed holiday. There were some references to it as an occasional homage to the Pilgrims, but most people thought that part was silly. Jefferson was particularly annoyed by the notion.

Again, it was Lincoln who made it an annual event and set it on the fourth Thursday in November. It only changed for two years during the Franklin Roosevelt administration, and moved up a week to stretch the Christmas buying pattern an extra week and help the economy. It was already a known fact that Thanksgiving was the kick-off to Christmas buying. A slew of half-baked traditionalists found the Roosevelt change an abomination since it somehow insulted Pilgrims or the D.A.R., or who knows who, and was changed back after two years of bickering.  That said, there were a few Federal proclamations declaring Thanksgiving for celebratory purposes. The first was in 1777, then randomly in 1795, 1798, 1799, and 1815. You’ll find most of these war-related.

Upcoming Events

Recap

The Tri-County Super Bowl Fairview Titans vs Burns Cowboys was on the 22nd, and the Titans won, so congratulations to that team for another game where they didn’t allow a score.

The Westview United Methodist event last weekend looked like a hit, based on the parking lot and some posts online.

The GraceWorks Mobile Food Pantry had a lot of cars and served many people on the 15th.

Some pictures from the Bowie Park Cider and Service Day were posted, and it looks like it went well.

There are tons of activities and sports in Fairview to keep your kids engaged.  There are some cheer programs and recreation teams for Baseball, Basketball, Football, and others. There is a thriving Girl Scout and Scouts BSA Programs in Fairview.  If you have a homeschooler, always check the Bowie Park schedule for clubs that meet there.  There is also LaLa’s Dance Studio and Elevate Gymnastics and Cheer.  There is also an excellent Taekwondo and Jujitsu school that teaches more than just moves, called Vigilance Martial Arts.  We also have a great wrestling program with some summer options.

Faith Moment

This sermon was perfect for this Thanksgiving show.  This is from The Bridge Church in Fredericksburg, Texas, by Brian Mandel.  This is a church I have followed for a couple of years, and I love their team and their messages, so it's in my regular Sunday rotation.  This talks about hunger and appetite and how we can get distracted by other things.  Some amazing sayings will be relevant.

( November 23, 2025 ) Hunger Games | Pastor Brian Mandel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fggTIvYMY1w

Welcome back, I hope you learned a couple of things, and I suggest listening to the rest of it because he puts a great bow on it for this holiday season and explains.  The Costco Christian and the relation of Twinkies and Ding Dongs was excellent.  He always does a great job delivering a relevant sermon using things around us.

Donations

On the Donations front, nothing new from Fountain.  We will have other payment options soon, just waiting for the tax man stuff to finish. We covered Fountain and Stripe Setup in the last episode, so a Donate button lets you use your Credit Card and other Payment methods through Stripe.

A monthly Supporter option is available for just $3.50.  If you haven’t seen the website, please take a look. A lot has been added since last week, and I think you will find it helpful, including the calendar, Church and Business List, and more.  We will announce your first name or business name if you become a monthly supporter or make a donation of $19.59 or more, unless you include a note stating not to be anonymous (e.g., 'The year we were incorporated').  I hope some business people will support this to make it even better!  Be a producer, subscribe, and share with others about this Podcast to help get the news out to everyone in Fairview.  I need to catch up on social media things to get the word out, but I’m trying to get the website and payments sorted first.

Thank You

1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:07,640
Howdy, and welcome to this Thanksgiving episode 11 of Hello Fairview, your local podcast made

2
00:00:07,640 --> 00:00:11,100
right here in Fairview for people in Fairview and the surrounding areas.

3
00:00:11,480 --> 00:00:15,980
This is a weekly show released every Wednesday featuring stories that aim to inform and inspire.

4
00:00:16,580 --> 00:00:20,940
Local radio stations and newspapers don't exist in small towns like ours, so we'll use

5
00:00:20,940 --> 00:00:23,920
Hello Fairview to fill that void with news related to Fairview.

6
00:00:24,060 --> 00:00:29,460
This is a value for value podcast, which means you contribute based on what value received

7
00:00:29,460 --> 00:00:36,460
This concept was founded by the podfather himself, Adam Curry, and his co-host John C. Dvorak of the No Agenda Show over 18 years ago.

8
00:00:37,080 --> 00:00:45,580
Currently, this is just a one-man operation, so if you have any ideas, events, business opportunities, job openings, or other news, please don't hesitate to let me know.

9
00:00:45,700 --> 00:00:49,140
Just send an email in the contact form, and you'll be good to go.

10
00:00:49,240 --> 00:00:50,340
You're a producer of this show.

11
00:00:50,440 --> 00:00:54,960
You are not the product because your time and attention are not being sold to advertisers for value.

12
00:00:54,960 --> 00:00:57,220
Some of these shows will be longer than others.

13
00:00:57,340 --> 00:01:00,580
Some will be shorter, but I'll try to do my best to keep things relevant.

14
00:01:01,020 --> 00:01:01,860
Traffic time.

15
00:01:02,760 --> 00:01:03,560
Normal busy.

16
00:01:03,860 --> 00:01:07,760
It's taken around two to five minutes to make a left turn in the morning and afternoon.

17
00:01:08,340 --> 00:01:11,320
Cumberland 100 are still getting work, which is good.

18
00:01:11,420 --> 00:01:14,320
It looks like they're slowing down for this kind of holiday week here.

19
00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:22,360
They're still working on building those culverts on the east and westbound sides to widen the road along with some kind of little mini bridges.

20
00:01:22,360 --> 00:01:28,120
uh we we basically less than one year out from it being done and so we'll have to just kind of

21
00:01:28,120 --> 00:01:34,820
ride the lightning so just keep watching out red light update we're still just uh three right now

22
00:01:34,820 --> 00:01:41,700
old cox public publics and walmart uh there's one at city sitting or city center entrance which the

23
00:01:41,700 --> 00:01:45,880
wires haven't even been terminated yet so i don't know i mean i guess that's going to be a while but

24
00:01:45,880 --> 00:01:51,200
they've started getting the uh curbs and a couple other drainage things done in city center so we'll

25
00:01:51,200 --> 00:01:56,640
see how that goes. I'm not sure how that'll hurt or help when that does, but obviously,

26
00:01:56,800 --> 00:02:01,080
study center is still going to have some construction closers here or there. We're growing.

27
00:02:01,820 --> 00:02:08,580
City news, commissioner update, health department is open across from the elementary school and was

28
00:02:08,580 --> 00:02:14,260
recently renovated, like we've talked about. They have a stock of vaccines if needed and other

29
00:02:14,260 --> 00:02:18,700
medical service, so please go check them out. The Fairview Police Department, Shop with a Cop,

30
00:02:18,700 --> 00:02:25,980
is wrapping up. Thanks to MJ and Sons for towing for their last generous donation. We saw a little

31
00:02:25,980 --> 00:02:31,160
post on that, so that's good. So we've had a couple local businesses work with them, and that's great.

32
00:02:31,700 --> 00:02:37,180
The City Blanket Drive wrapped up this week, and so this was the first time it wrapped up on the

33
00:02:37,180 --> 00:02:40,560
24th at City Hall, and they were accepting blankets, so we're waiting to see that. That'll

34
00:02:40,560 --> 00:02:45,760
be next week, most likely. Christmas trees. It looks like there's going to be some at Messick

35
00:02:45,760 --> 00:02:51,720
chiropractic for the scouts BSA troop 297 that's hosted here in Fairview. And then there'll be

36
00:02:51,720 --> 00:02:56,820
Christmas trees at farm fresh vintage. There may also be some others, but I'll be on the lookout.

37
00:02:57,140 --> 00:03:02,540
Black Friday is probably the best day if you have time to go ahead and get them. And that way you

38
00:03:02,540 --> 00:03:07,840
can just kind of knock it out that same day. Special elections and early voting has started.

39
00:03:07,980 --> 00:03:14,160
It's wrapping up today on the showdown, the 26th at high noon. So make sure you've been out there.

40
00:03:14,160 --> 00:03:19,920
and do that otherwise you got to wait till next week on December 2nd.

41
00:03:20,280 --> 00:03:25,880
Other city news they posted some stuff on some scams going on and basically it was just a simple

42
00:03:25,880 --> 00:03:30,880
reminder of never send money or gift cards to people on the phone you don't know never reveal

43
00:03:30,880 --> 00:03:35,080
personal information like your banking information or social security number over the phone and always

44
00:03:35,080 --> 00:03:41,380
ask questions and details from the caller don't be afraid to hang up you know even if it is those

45
00:03:41,380 --> 00:03:50,240
car extended warranties. Another one is another and other other city news. It's your last call to

46
00:03:50,240 --> 00:03:55,860
get a fence picket at Bowie Park at the playground. The deadline is December 31st, and this is where

47
00:03:55,860 --> 00:04:01,360
you can get it engraved. There's people's families and loving memory of. I know the Boy Scout and

48
00:04:01,360 --> 00:04:07,140
Cub Scout troop both have theirs. I think the Girl Scouts do to the service unit and a couple of the

49
00:04:07,140 --> 00:04:10,800
teams and other organizations have them. So it's really, really good.

50
00:04:12,460 --> 00:04:18,440
So city meeting updates. Basically, since last time, there hasn't been any meetings for the

51
00:04:18,440 --> 00:04:23,460
zoning appeals. There wasn't a new planning commission meeting, board of commissioners

52
00:04:23,460 --> 00:04:26,820
meeting. There was one on November 20th. We're going to get into that. And the next one is

53
00:04:26,820 --> 00:04:33,380
December 4th and 18th at 7 p.m. Town Hall, board of commissioner town hall is not until January 29th,

54
00:04:33,380 --> 00:04:40,040
2026 parks and landscape board, uh, December 1st at 1 PM around town coffee, December 10th and

55
00:04:40,040 --> 00:04:46,340
January 14th, um, is the next there. And there's no beer board planned either. So basically beer

56
00:04:46,340 --> 00:04:51,260
board and zoning appeals will never have a schedule unless someone is appealing or there's

57
00:04:51,260 --> 00:04:57,520
someplace wanting to sell beer. So recap meetings, uh, on November 20th, you know, things got into

58
00:04:57,520 --> 00:05:04,740
there. One of the speakers that came in as the city events, which was section seven was Steve.

59
00:05:04,980 --> 00:05:10,140
He talked about his love of horticulture and what he's been doing with the Natchez greenhouse

60
00:05:10,140 --> 00:05:16,920
presentation, a very hungry caterpillar garden, which is the hands-on teaching classroom and

61
00:05:16,920 --> 00:05:20,740
talked about how he's working with Williamson County schools and some other things to get

62
00:05:20,740 --> 00:05:28,160
people out there and interested in this. And he talked about how 2.75 inches of water came into

63
00:05:28,160 --> 00:05:33,100
his crawl space, which didn't happen even in the 2010 flood, which was over seven inches.

64
00:05:33,260 --> 00:05:38,560
So something has changed. So he talked about that. And then he discussed a lot about landscape

65
00:05:38,560 --> 00:05:43,180
architecture design, its relationship to green space. So it was pretty, pretty interesting stuff

66
00:05:43,180 --> 00:05:47,580
that you might not normally hear. Staff comments, city manager pretty much just said,

67
00:05:47,580 --> 00:05:55,860
happy thanksgiving it'll be closed on the 28th and 29th the first resolution 6125 passed 5-0

68
00:05:55,860 --> 00:06:03,480
this was just basically the agenda so that's all good there old business 5425 which is the board

69
00:06:03,480 --> 00:06:10,240
of commissioners talking about the installation of some stop signs this past 5-0 so there's going

70
00:06:10,240 --> 00:06:14,300
to be some stop signs on old national highway commissioner hall was the one that sponsored this

71
00:06:14,300 --> 00:06:21,080
one and he talked about the speeding problem on the road and how slow things down and that one of

72
00:06:21,080 --> 00:06:24,740
the people lived there had never seen a crash there in over 50 years and it's starting to happen

73
00:06:24,740 --> 00:06:30,200
so talked about the minimum measurements that were taken for the site distance for 30 miles per hour

74
00:06:30,200 --> 00:06:35,020
and there would be two stop signs and two stop ahead signs put placed on there

75
00:06:35,020 --> 00:06:41,620
so we'll so we'll see those come in there commissioner roberts made sure and said that

76
00:06:41,620 --> 00:06:45,820
this isn't about traffic calming because apparently there's some regulations of what they can and

77
00:06:45,820 --> 00:06:51,100
can't do but this is just for safety for people coming in and out of their driveway so it's like

78
00:06:51,100 --> 00:06:56,240
i guess the city's not allowed to lower the speed limit uh officially that like t dot and all that

79
00:06:56,240 --> 00:07:03,500
does um so that works whatever all right a new business this was added during the meeting was a

80
00:07:03,500 --> 00:07:11,540
five zero. This was on the quick claim deed on the park property on highway 96. Um, and so this is,

81
00:07:11,660 --> 00:07:16,900
this is the property on the lions club donated back to the city, I think back in 1996. And there

82
00:07:16,900 --> 00:07:26,380
was a desire to return this back to, um, the city of Fairview and the Fairview recreation association

83
00:07:26,380 --> 00:07:32,600
board, uh, Ricky Jones and the, uh, County commissioner and mayor Rogers, uh, Anderson

84
00:07:32,600 --> 00:07:38,260
will sponsor the resolution if they do. Commissioner Buffalini continued to have

85
00:07:38,260 --> 00:07:44,020
FRA operated by them and they could make some amendments and more structural and financial

86
00:07:44,020 --> 00:07:48,480
changes. FRA would be able to retain funds and raise and reinvest in the facility.

87
00:07:49,320 --> 00:07:55,200
Mayor Anderson said that sounds like a lot of responsibility to the city and that they would

88
00:07:55,200 --> 00:08:01,160
be prepared in the FRA. We could give it back to the FRA for like a $1 a year lease. Attorneys

89
00:08:01,160 --> 00:08:05,720
are going to have to still be involved. There's a preliminary, this was very preliminary. It was

90
00:08:05,720 --> 00:08:11,480
just a discussion. It require more steps because there's $150,000 that would be owed to the county

91
00:08:11,480 --> 00:08:16,300
for the installed lights that they did a couple of years ago. Commissioner McDonald would like to

92
00:08:16,300 --> 00:08:20,560
know the property's price and the cost to run it and the insurance and things like that in the

93
00:08:20,560 --> 00:08:27,880
project timeline. So definitely good stuff. The president of the FRA was there and as a board,

94
00:08:27,880 --> 00:08:30,020
They don't have really control over what happens.

95
00:08:30,140 --> 00:08:31,120
There's multiple points.

96
00:08:31,480 --> 00:08:35,900
This facility use agreement, they pay $10 per player for the year.

97
00:08:36,260 --> 00:08:38,320
The county handles trash collection and maintenance.

98
00:08:38,740 --> 00:08:41,660
The FRA is responsible for the field of play and games.

99
00:08:41,940 --> 00:08:47,000
And, you know, I'm not sure, you know, they get $54,000 a year is what the county says

100
00:08:47,000 --> 00:08:48,300
it takes to do that.

101
00:08:48,340 --> 00:08:49,420
And they wouldn't have that money.

102
00:08:50,240 --> 00:08:55,580
They have some money in, you know, in their account, but it was not meant to pay for that

103
00:08:55,580 --> 00:08:56,120
kind of stuff.

104
00:08:56,120 --> 00:09:01,640
there's continued talks about donations and other things they do the county has matched the fra and

105
00:09:01,640 --> 00:09:06,520
passed which would not be possible if this moved under the city because the city wouldn't have that

106
00:09:06,520 --> 00:09:11,940
kind of money that the county does mayor anderson if the rest of the asked if the rest of the board

107
00:09:11,940 --> 00:09:17,920
agreed with him and pretty much said that he thinks that most people do um but he's going from

108
00:09:17,920 --> 00:09:23,720
there asked on the bond total cost he has concerns about the the traffic mat the money match and

109
00:09:23,720 --> 00:09:29,420
everything and the burden that could come there um what the next steps are and uh basically you

110
00:09:29,420 --> 00:09:35,120
know spring baseball softball they see around 30 to 40k in gross per year but that's not enough

111
00:09:35,120 --> 00:09:39,300
money to you know mow the grass and do all the things that the county is doing for them

112
00:09:39,300 --> 00:09:44,940
and so we'll have to see commissioner roberts with you know this was a surprise and she doesn't have

113
00:09:44,940 --> 00:09:48,760
enough information to make any decisions because this was just released to them and a little piece

114
00:09:48,760 --> 00:09:53,420
of paper that there because we're trying to wonder what the cost is what the revenue is

115
00:09:53,420 --> 00:09:59,720
you know how we can do stuff you know and you know 150 000 for 30 acres sounds like a great deal but

116
00:09:59,720 --> 00:10:05,640
just thoughts of the actual impact of the city and what we could do there commissioner hall says he

117
00:10:05,640 --> 00:10:09,840
doesn't know the origin story either and asked about the property on the back side of the field

118
00:10:09,840 --> 00:10:15,320
and doesn't know and the fra member said they you know were fine with whatever uh was decided

119
00:10:15,320 --> 00:10:21,320
um but you know let's go from there city manager said there's not enough information of that city

120
00:10:21,320 --> 00:10:27,760
planner said that pretty much the same thing and that they would have to do a con to conduct a cost

121
00:10:27,760 --> 00:10:32,060
analysis and environmental impact and you know kind of the standard procedure for any property

122
00:10:32,060 --> 00:10:38,140
acquisition for this and they would work with the team to do that that is the Lions Club that owns

123
00:10:38,140 --> 00:10:43,740
that kind of like piece of property that's in the back there the city attorney said that this should

124
00:10:43,740 --> 00:10:48,960
have just been a discussion but we're going deeper than we should there is any tax on this property

125
00:10:48,960 --> 00:10:53,280
because it's a government property, this is supposed to be a process that the planning

126
00:10:53,280 --> 00:10:57,940
commission does to request improvements and make, and then make a vote and staff look into things

127
00:10:57,940 --> 00:11:03,720
and go all that. So send the emails to the people to get this kind of stuff done and not use meeting

128
00:11:03,720 --> 00:11:11,260
time for that. So that was a long back and forth of that. Resolution 6025, which is getting a grant

129
00:11:11,260 --> 00:11:16,200
for driver training for the city of Fairview Fire Department, which was apparently just a couple

130
00:11:16,200 --> 00:11:21,560
hundred dollars per, I guess, driver, passed five zero. And, you know, wasn't any more than that.

131
00:11:21,740 --> 00:11:26,540
Then there was a discussion of the Parks and Landscape Board. Commissioner Roberts brought

132
00:11:26,540 --> 00:11:31,260
this, sponsored this up, talked about what the Parks and Landscape Board has done, what they're

133
00:11:31,260 --> 00:11:36,820
doing for the city, and a list of some projects that they've been talking about because we didn't

134
00:11:36,820 --> 00:11:42,080
know how to connect these things. Like who says Parks and Landscape Board does this, who pays for

135
00:11:42,080 --> 00:11:48,340
it. At Veterans Park, there's a pier that they would like to do, and this is from the landscape

136
00:11:48,340 --> 00:11:54,560
board, sidewalk, pavers for the flagpole, maybe even engraved as a fundraiser, finish up the

137
00:11:54,560 --> 00:11:59,720
basketball goal there. Bowie Park needs trail erosion work, shade trees around the playground,

138
00:11:59,980 --> 00:12:04,340
no smoking signs, a digital display at the front entry to maybe replace the current sign,

139
00:12:04,880 --> 00:12:09,420
increase parking by the playground, and re-striping of the Nature Center parking lot.

140
00:12:09,420 --> 00:12:17,040
commissioner buffalini um you know basically asked you know that they only sent the email

141
00:12:17,040 --> 00:12:22,820
uh on august 5th back to there so we have a list of things to do with you know what we've got from

142
00:12:22,820 --> 00:12:30,140
commissioner roberts and the board so we need to do that and mr doe door row uh was there he is

143
00:12:30,140 --> 00:12:36,580
i guess the chairman of the park and landscape board uh and he said this is unique because you

144
00:12:36,580 --> 00:12:41,060
know they're not under any boc meetings they've been using social media and word of mouth to find

145
00:12:41,060 --> 00:12:48,500
out things uh that the board should take a bit take notice of this is where other properties come

146
00:12:48,500 --> 00:12:53,380
to the ball field and other things that the boc approval they have to sit back and wait for task

147
00:12:54,020 --> 00:12:58,900
but there are some things and research that they've done we cancel about half their meetings

148
00:12:58,900 --> 00:13:03,380
a year because not enough new business shows up and there's not any interaction with the boc

149
00:13:03,380 --> 00:13:09,880
They did a big push, obviously, for the Playground Rebuild Committee to research the design ideas,

150
00:13:09,880 --> 00:13:10,880
costs, pick the vendors.

151
00:13:10,880 --> 00:13:13,680
There was all kinds of stuff they did, which we're very thankful for.

152
00:13:13,680 --> 00:13:27,156
They did a great job on it because it turned out awesome And there hasn been anything given to them and only some minor things at Veterans Park And so they were only a board officially approved last year and they understand that there

153
00:13:27,156 --> 00:13:30,896
limitations of what the board can and can't do, and basically they're just hanging out.

154
00:13:31,676 --> 00:13:35,436
Commissioner Hall asked when the board was founded. They kind of went back and forth on that.

155
00:13:35,696 --> 00:13:41,096
And now the city staff, Commissioner McDonald, asked if we could use that list of things and

156
00:13:41,096 --> 00:13:46,156
start making a list officially and bringing it to the meeting and getting some stuff approved.

157
00:13:46,216 --> 00:13:48,936
so they could see what the cost is and go from there.

158
00:13:49,656 --> 00:13:53,596
And the city manager mentioned multiple times he was trying to stay out of things,

159
00:13:53,836 --> 00:13:58,396
but Ordinance 2024-07 is what created this.

160
00:13:59,036 --> 00:14:03,916
He thinks that there's a lot of double work that's being done between his, I guess,

161
00:14:03,916 --> 00:14:10,156
the actual parks and landscape team that takes care of things around the park and the city,

162
00:14:10,316 --> 00:14:12,296
like mowing the grass in the middle and all that kind of stuff.

163
00:14:12,816 --> 00:14:14,756
And so we need to figure out what's going on

164
00:14:14,756 --> 00:14:19,636
and trying to figure out how citizen advisory could work and just try to figure out what's

165
00:14:19,636 --> 00:14:19,996
going on.

166
00:14:20,056 --> 00:14:24,416
So it almost felt like he was trying to disbarred a little bit, but I don't know.

167
00:14:25,016 --> 00:14:29,336
And then discussion, another one that was added, this was by Commissioner Roberts, and

168
00:14:29,336 --> 00:14:33,956
this was the out parcel and into the land trust and raising it because this hasn't been

169
00:14:33,956 --> 00:14:34,716
talked about a while.

170
00:14:34,836 --> 00:14:38,896
Commissioner McDonald said that piece of property has been protected by the BOC, but it could

171
00:14:38,896 --> 00:14:41,236
be another group of people who want to change things.

172
00:14:41,236 --> 00:14:43,796
not putting it in the trust leaves the board with some options.

173
00:14:44,516 --> 00:14:48,556
And this property is very sensitive based on this was going to be the shooting range

174
00:14:48,556 --> 00:14:50,416
until it got moved out to Hickman County.

175
00:14:51,016 --> 00:14:54,516
Commissioner Roberts took some of those things,

176
00:14:54,596 --> 00:14:57,156
doesn't think that the trust will actually limit anything,

177
00:14:57,836 --> 00:15:04,096
thinks that the proposed ag center options that Mr. Buffalini would add a lot of traffic

178
00:15:04,096 --> 00:15:06,916
and a lot of other things that might not,

179
00:15:06,916 --> 00:15:12,656
it's not going to match the style of Bowie Park as the city continues to develop. This should be

180
00:15:12,656 --> 00:15:19,636
protected. Commissioner Buffalini talked about what some of the agricultural centers and building

181
00:15:19,636 --> 00:15:23,796
some grants and riding arenas and stuff like that, maybe even to generate some revenue.

182
00:15:24,556 --> 00:15:30,556
Doesn't want the property, doesn't like what the property, what it does now and would like to see

183
00:15:30,556 --> 00:15:34,716
it do something. Maybe it's a garden or compost center and a couple other options could explore.

184
00:15:34,716 --> 00:15:40,036
then when we got to the round table basically everyone said happy thanksgiving and all that

185
00:15:40,036 --> 00:15:46,376
commissioner mcdonald mentioned the burn super bowl coming up that weekend at 3 p.m at charlotte

186
00:15:46,376 --> 00:15:50,916
middle school wanted everyone to make sure you went to that because both teams are undefeated so

187
00:15:50,916 --> 00:15:57,056
somebody has to lose commissioner buffalini talked about thanks to everyone and thanks to

188
00:15:57,056 --> 00:16:01,876
natural screen program and how it found you know he he thought that this property was just overgrown

189
00:16:01,876 --> 00:16:05,476
passing it on 96, but realized that it was art and science at the same time.

190
00:16:05,696 --> 00:16:10,356
Thanks to the speakers and the commission related to the Richvale building issues from

191
00:16:10,356 --> 00:16:12,216
our last planning commission meeting.

192
00:16:13,536 --> 00:16:15,536
So we're praying for those people.

193
00:16:16,176 --> 00:16:22,576
District 7 voting is going on right now to reinstate the Mark Green seat at the U.S.

194
00:16:23,376 --> 00:16:24,876
And so we'll go from there.

195
00:16:25,316 --> 00:16:30,156
Mayor Anderson is excited about this game too, wishing everybody to have a safe travel

196
00:16:30,156 --> 00:16:31,596
and happy Thanksgiving.

197
00:16:31,876 --> 00:16:37,936
and that getting the Natchez Green program that was presented,

198
00:16:38,156 --> 00:16:41,396
that it's good to get our kids away from keyboards is a great thing,

199
00:16:41,636 --> 00:16:45,716
and thanks for everybody and everything that they're doing to keep Fairview clean.

200
00:16:46,556 --> 00:16:48,356
So like we've said, I guess a couple times,

201
00:16:48,636 --> 00:16:53,316
early voting is ending up today at high noon on the 26th,

202
00:16:53,316 --> 00:16:56,176
and December 2nd will be game time.

203
00:16:56,836 --> 00:16:59,916
Turnout is still down from multiple sources,

204
00:16:59,916 --> 00:17:06,056
So this could be kind of interesting because this has actually made some national news, this special district and election.

205
00:17:06,776 --> 00:17:24,636
Jeff Long of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security and Highway Patrol and multiple law enforcement partners announced the Tennessee Safe Thanksgiving Travel Challenge Initiative, which basically means don't speed and be safe is the gist of that story and that there's going to be police out to monitor.

206
00:17:24,636 --> 00:17:29,976
So be safe in your travels to and from wherever you're getting your fun time food.

207
00:17:30,696 --> 00:17:43,096
Former House Speaker Glenn Quesada and his ex-chief of staff are facing corruption charges at the U.S. Department of Justice requested their conviction and prison orders be vacated as they received a presidential pardon.

208
00:17:43,096 --> 00:17:51,096
So the only thing I don't like about this in some cases is there's a lot of pardons for political things.

209
00:17:51,836 --> 00:17:59,076
And if they were truly charged and all that, it just feels like that they are above the law when you see pardons for that kind of stuff.

210
00:17:59,696 --> 00:18:03,756
For people that have done crime and, you know, corruption things.

211
00:18:03,756 --> 00:18:15,336
The Tennessee Higher Education Committee announced today that more than 67,000 high school seniors applied for the Tennessee Promise ahead of the November deadline, maintaining that it's going.

212
00:18:16,236 --> 00:18:23,676
Construction on the Music City Loop has stopped after one of the contractors reported that they haven't been paid upon at an agreed milestone.

213
00:18:23,676 --> 00:18:27,416
So there's been also more talk that there could be more stops added.

214
00:18:27,536 --> 00:18:34,456
And there may be a public hearing with public at Metro Council because that hasn't happened.

215
00:18:34,536 --> 00:18:35,956
This has been kind of a sweetheart deal.

216
00:18:36,596 --> 00:18:38,716
The bills, nothing for this week.

217
00:18:38,916 --> 00:18:44,076
You know, it looks like they took vacation and we've got stuff, you know, booked out in December.

218
00:18:44,076 --> 00:18:45,996
But that's a little too far from there.

219
00:18:46,636 --> 00:18:47,136
How's the hill?

220
00:18:47,736 --> 00:18:50,156
Well, right now it's passable, clear.

221
00:18:50,276 --> 00:18:51,296
It's definitely getting colder.

222
00:18:51,296 --> 00:18:56,476
The weather guessers are predicting highs in the 40s with lows in the 20s starting this week.

223
00:18:56,916 --> 00:18:59,256
Maybe we're going back to fall finally.

224
00:18:59,456 --> 00:18:59,856
I don't know.

225
00:18:59,956 --> 00:19:03,756
We've had some bipolar weather because we've had some 70-degree days just a couple days ago.

226
00:19:04,736 --> 00:19:07,636
New businesses, Ace Hardware, nothing new is spotted.

227
00:19:07,876 --> 00:19:08,996
Ace Hardware is still brewing.

228
00:19:09,196 --> 00:19:11,396
There's a piece of property for sale on Highway 100.

229
00:19:11,636 --> 00:19:17,236
That was that piece of property across from one of the dentists there in City Center that they were just clearing off.

230
00:19:17,236 --> 00:19:23,376
This was asked about at a planning commission meeting months ago when they first started tearing, ripping all the trees up and building it up.

231
00:19:23,616 --> 00:19:25,376
It's actually for sale now.

232
00:19:25,816 --> 00:19:28,496
And so we'll see what goes there.

233
00:19:28,956 --> 00:19:32,876
And I think that's already going to be able to be easily zoned to whatever.

234
00:19:33,696 --> 00:19:34,276
Farmer's market.

235
00:19:34,496 --> 00:19:44,876
Make sure you head to the farmer's market every Saturday morning, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Messick Chiropractic and Fairview Fresh Deli Donuts for their life changing fritters right down the road from Publix.

236
00:19:44,876 --> 00:19:53,916
There's so many good places to get local beef, pork, breads, treats, fruits, vegetables, hot sauce, fishing lures, and a lot of other holiday gifts this time of year.

237
00:19:54,016 --> 00:19:54,756
So go check them out.

238
00:19:55,756 --> 00:19:57,076
Brick and mortar highlight.

239
00:19:57,596 --> 00:19:59,736
Snappy's Pizza is who we picked this time.

240
00:19:59,956 --> 00:20:03,496
They've been here for over 17 years, and they've made it to have some amazing pizza.

241
00:20:03,836 --> 00:20:06,516
But they also have a heart for the city.

242
00:20:06,936 --> 00:20:11,756
And you'll see them around town sponsoring teams, nonprofits, the theater, you name it.

243
00:20:12,096 --> 00:20:13,716
All four schools.

244
00:20:13,716 --> 00:20:15,256
They do a lot of good work.

245
00:20:15,336 --> 00:20:17,376
So make sure and check them out around Publix.

246
00:20:17,516 --> 00:20:23,316
And sometimes if you're waiting there and you're picking up, you might see some strawberry lemon or chocolate cakes at the checkout counter.

247
00:20:23,576 --> 00:20:26,136
You can obviously dine in or carry out.

248
00:20:26,596 --> 00:20:31,696
And their cinnamon sticks pizza are pretty epic in the world of dessert pizza.

249
00:20:32,756 --> 00:20:33,696
Job openings.

250
00:20:34,376 --> 00:20:35,516
Lots of them still.

251
00:20:35,736 --> 00:20:39,676
The city still has the associate planner and police officer positions open.

252
00:20:39,676 --> 00:20:52,036
Then we still have Walmart, Cornerstone, Publix, Dunkin', Boys and Girls Clubs, Both Subways, The Pearl, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Sonic, McDonald's, Tractor Supply Co., Marmon Holdings, Hardee's, and Destination Pet.

253
00:20:52,576 --> 00:20:56,296
Pretty much that list hasn't changed in a while, so there are lots of jobs.

254
00:20:56,716 --> 00:20:59,356
And if you have any other job postings, please let us know.

255
00:20:59,696 --> 00:21:01,356
We would love to have it read weekly.

256
00:21:01,496 --> 00:21:04,616
Just use the contact form on the website if there's some kind of job out there.

257
00:21:04,936 --> 00:21:09,396
Or internships or something like that if you work at a construction company or trade or something like that.

258
00:21:09,396 --> 00:21:16,416
We'd love to promote any jobs so that young people and regular old people can get a thing.

259
00:21:17,196 --> 00:21:18,736
All right, history nugget.

260
00:21:18,816 --> 00:21:22,976
Well, this is the Thanksgiving show, so we will definitely talk about that.

261
00:21:23,076 --> 00:21:33,536
The term Thanksgiving was brandished throughout U.S. history and officially codified by Lincoln in 1863 at behest of an activist and writer named Sarah Hale.

262
00:21:33,536 --> 00:21:42,696
Before 1863, there was no Thanksgiving per se, but a lot of proclamations giving thanks for this and that all called Thanksgiving.

263
00:21:43,476 --> 00:21:52,656
There were virtually no Thanksgiving events from the Thomas Jefferson administration until Sarah revitalized the dying idea.

264
00:21:52,736 --> 00:21:55,296
Her rationale is that America didn't have enough holidays.

265
00:21:55,296 --> 00:22:09,856
The Lincoln Thanksgiving was justified as a celebration of the Norse victory of the Battle of Gettysburg and had nothing to do with pilgrims or any of that thing, and basically giving a day of thanks for all that was lost in this civil war.

266
00:22:10,696 --> 00:22:18,816
Even the first supposed Thanksgiving in 1621 was a three-day one-shot party modeled after something called Harvest Home.

267
00:22:18,816 --> 00:22:25,516
This isn't called Thanksgiving. Harvest Home was an end of the harvest party celebrated by the British Isles.

268
00:22:26,016 --> 00:22:44,916
This party didn't even happen again until 1621 when apparently even some of the Indian guests that were invited were later killed by settlers after that in all the wars and trials and tribulations.

269
00:22:45,896 --> 00:22:54,536
Once documented, Thanksgiving was cited for the one-shot celebration all held on June 20th in 1776.

270
00:22:54,836 --> 00:22:58,376
This Thanksgiving is more generic term than an ad-libbed holiday.

271
00:22:58,856 --> 00:23:03,796
There were some references of occasional homage to the pilgrim, but many people thought that part was kind of silly.

272
00:23:04,356 --> 00:23:07,596
Jefferson was particularly annoyed by that notion.

273
00:23:08,736 --> 00:23:14,636
Again, it was Lincoln that made this into an annual event and set it to the fourth Thursday of November.

274
00:23:14,636 --> 00:23:23,936
It was only changed for two years during the Franklin Roosevelt administration and moved up a week to stretch out the Christmas buying season for to help the economy.

275
00:23:24,236 --> 00:23:30,116
And it was already known from that. Thanksgiving was the kickoff is the official kickoff of the Christmas buying season.

276
00:23:30,836 --> 00:23:38,536
A slew of half baked traditionalists found Roosevelt change that and somehow insulted there.

277
00:23:38,656 --> 00:23:41,476
So who knows why it was changed back? You know, two years of bickering.

278
00:23:41,476 --> 00:23:47,436
Basically, they said there was the first few federal proclamations of Thanksgiving and celebratory purposes.

279
00:23:48,616 --> 00:23:54,476
The first was in 1777 and then in 1795, 1798, 1799 and 1815.

280
00:23:55,456 --> 00:24:04,536
And you'll find that most of those proclamations related to Thanksgiving before 1863 were related to war and thanking all that.

281
00:24:05,216 --> 00:24:06,136
Upcoming events.

282
00:24:06,136 --> 00:24:13,096
Well, the Tri-County Super Bowl and Fairview Titans versus Burn Cowboys on the 22nd was done.

283
00:24:13,236 --> 00:24:15,456
Congratulations to the Fairview Titans.

284
00:24:16,576 --> 00:24:20,056
And you also extended your lead.

285
00:24:20,156 --> 00:24:25,176
I think it was 394 points now of scores with not one point scored on them.

286
00:24:25,656 --> 00:24:28,476
So they ended a perfect season with a perfect score.

287
00:24:28,776 --> 00:24:29,696
Pretty awesome.

288
00:24:29,696 --> 00:24:36,636
uh the westview united methodist uh christmas market was a good event last week it looked like

289
00:24:36,636 --> 00:24:41,096
based on the parking lot and some posts online that they had good turnout and the grace works

290
00:24:41,096 --> 00:24:46,736
mobile food pantry had a lot of cars coming in on the 15th and saw some pictures there uh and the

291
00:24:46,736 --> 00:24:52,096
buoy park cider and service day were posted so it looks like that kind of went well it doesn't look

292
00:24:52,096 --> 00:24:57,816
like there was a lot of turnout and but it wasn't i mean it was advertised but i guess it just didn't

293
00:24:57,816 --> 00:25:03,556
to do it. So new events coming up, right? So November 27th, uh, on Turkey day, uh, seven 30

339
00:28:37,092 --> 00:28:44,252

340
00:28:44,252 --> 00:28:53,192
Thanksgiving show. This is from the Bridge Church in Fredericksburg, Texas. This is Brian Mandel

341
00:28:53,192 --> 00:29:00,692
and this church I've followed for a couple years now and I love their team and their messages

342
00:29:00,692 --> 00:29:07,972
so it's on my regular kind of Sunday rotation. This talks about the difference in the descriptions

343
00:29:07,972 --> 00:29:13,772
of hunger versus appetite and how we can get distracted by a lot of things and a lot of real

344
00:29:13,772 --> 00:29:19,852
amazing sayings all related to food and Thanksgiving so I think you'll really enjoy it.

345
00:29:19,852 --> 00:29:21,452
It's a really, really good message.

346
00:29:22,272 --> 00:29:24,192
And so here we go.

347
00:29:24,472 --> 00:29:25,732
Welcome to Bridge Church.

348
00:29:25,812 --> 00:29:27,092
I'm Pastor Brian Mandel.

349
00:29:27,172 --> 00:29:31,332
It's my honor and my privilege to get to share God's word with you this morning.

350
00:29:31,532 --> 00:29:35,932
And I'm just going to give you a little disclaimer right up front as we get started.

351
00:29:36,372 --> 00:29:42,132
I'm just going to go ahead and say that many of you this morning, if I do my job, might feel called out.

352
00:29:42,992 --> 00:29:46,352
And if that's what happens, then I'm just going to go ahead and say, that's great.

353
00:29:46,352 --> 00:29:50,212
That is so good because that is actually the love of God.

354
00:29:50,312 --> 00:29:53,632
Did you know that the love of God in our hearts begins with conviction?

355
00:29:54,092 --> 00:29:58,212
It begins with this pricking of our spirit that goes, ooh, that's for me.

356
00:29:58,312 --> 00:29:59,352
Ooh, God's speaking to me.

357
00:29:59,452 --> 00:30:01,692
Ooh, God wants to do something in my life.

358
00:30:01,752 --> 00:30:07,412
And so that's what I've been praying for you all week is that conviction would come as his word is spoken this morning.

359
00:30:07,452 --> 00:30:08,212
Because you know what happens?

360
00:30:08,732 --> 00:30:10,992
Conviction leads to confession.

361
00:30:11,532 --> 00:30:13,492
It's that confessing of God, I need you.

362
00:30:13,492 --> 00:30:16,072
And as we confess, then that leads to Christ himself.

363
00:30:16,352 --> 00:30:25,832
It starts with conviction. It leads to confession. And then it ends with you face to face with Jesus, which is what all of us need. Can somebody say amen this morning?

364
00:30:26,672 --> 00:30:37,732
Now, in the spirit of the week of Thanksgiving that we have coming up, today's message is going to be titled Hunger Games. Hunger Games. Anybody hungry already this morning? You ready for lunch already?

365
00:30:38,172 --> 00:30:40,312
This morning's message is called Hunger Games.

366
00:30:40,392 --> 00:30:43,872
And so I'm just going to say, may the odds be ever in your favor this morning.

367
00:30:44,472 --> 00:30:47,232
And where the Spirit of the Lord is, the odds are always in your favor.

368
00:30:47,312 --> 00:30:49,192
So as we get into this, I just want to make a statement.

369
00:30:49,252 --> 00:30:52,992
I have a confession to make this morning as we get into this Hunger Games message.

370
00:30:53,192 --> 00:30:55,412
I love food.

371
00:30:55,812 --> 00:30:57,052
Anybody else with me on this?

372
00:30:57,052 --> 00:31:01,772
Man, I think food is one of the best ideas that God ever had.

373
00:31:01,932 --> 00:31:06,972
When he said, I'm going to bless you with meat and food, and you need to do this three times a day.

374
00:31:06,972 --> 00:31:13,232
thank you, Jesus, right there. Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus. It is a passionate subject for me. I mean,

375
00:31:13,252 --> 00:31:17,652
when I see steak and lobster in particular, can we put that on the screen? Man, when I see that

376
00:31:17,652 --> 00:31:22,072
right there, that makes me want to break out into song right there. I'm just like, man, when you say

377
00:31:22,072 --> 00:31:29,572
God is good, I say all the time when I say all the time. You say? Praise the Lord. All right.

378
00:31:29,572 --> 00:31:37,892
I love food and I think God made it for us to enjoy I mean I prepare for Thanksgiving feast

379
00:31:37,892 --> 00:31:43,612
like it's game day I mean there is stretching involved there's exercises to prepare for there's

380
00:31:43,612 --> 00:31:48,592
self-talk there's inspiring speeches there's teamwork there's competition and we got to get

381
00:31:48,592 --> 00:31:53,652
to it all right I mean Thanksgiving is a full contact sport for me all right I'm not messing

382
00:31:53,652 --> 00:31:59,972
around. But man, this thing, hunger, the hunger, we have it every single day. We have it multiple

383
00:31:59,972 --> 00:32:06,132
times a day. And it's like this joyous rhythm that God gave us that we're hungry and then we're

384
00:32:06,132 --> 00:32:10,272
hungry again and then we're hungry again. And just as soon as we've got it satisfied, a little bit

385
00:32:10,272 --> 00:32:16,752
more time goes by and we are hungry again. It's this joyous rhythm in what can be an otherwise

386
00:32:16,752 --> 00:32:22,772
unpredictable and chaotic and sometimes very difficult world that we live in. As hard as your

387
00:32:22,772 --> 00:32:28,572
day is, at some point you're going to sit down and have a meal and decompress from whatever you got

388
00:32:28,572 --> 00:32:35,272
going on, right? Hunger is meant to make us stop and go, all right, I need something to refuel and

389
00:32:35,272 --> 00:32:40,992
prepare me to keep on going. Can somebody say amen this morning? And some of you probably already know

390
00:32:40,992 --> 00:32:47,372
I'm not just talking about natural food and bodily hunger because we hunger in many different ways.

391
00:32:47,372 --> 00:32:52,632
We are body, we are soul, and we are spirit, and every part of our being hungers.

392
00:32:52,732 --> 00:32:54,092
Can you say amen this morning?

393
00:32:54,452 --> 00:33:00,152
In fact, I'd like to propose to you this morning that life is actually one big hunger game.

394
00:33:01,052 --> 00:33:07,332
Every one of us hungers in our body, and every one of us hungers in our soul.

395
00:33:08,192 --> 00:33:14,472
It's how you satisfy that hunger that will ultimately determine everything for you.

396
00:33:15,292 --> 00:33:16,012
I'm going to say that again.

397
00:33:16,012 --> 00:33:23,652
everybody hungers. It's how you satisfy that hunger that will determine everything for you.

398
00:33:23,892 --> 00:33:29,692
I mean, can you remember a time when you were really, really, really hungry? I mean, as hungry

399
00:33:29,692 --> 00:33:35,212
as you've ever been. This makes me think back when I was in Air Force basic training, and week

400
00:33:35,212 --> 00:33:40,532
five of basic training was what they called warrior week. And what they would do is they

401
00:33:40,532 --> 00:33:45,212
shipped us off out into the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the woods, and we lived in tents

402
00:33:45,212 --> 00:33:50,732
for that week, and they were constantly putting us in these war game scenarios where in the middle

403
00:33:50,732 --> 00:33:55,332
of the night, our battalion would get attacked, and we'd have to go to work, and I mean, we were

404
00:33:55,332 --> 00:34:00,432
getting almost no sleep, and we were eating almost no food, and when we did get food, it was a terrible

405
00:34:00,432 --> 00:34:06,452
MRE that was like the same one every time, and if you ever had an MRE, it's like this plastic kind of

406
00:34:06,452 --> 00:34:10,992
non-food. I don't know where they came up with that stuff, but it lasts like 100 years, so I guess

407
00:34:10,992 --> 00:34:11,832
That's why they made it.

408
00:34:12,132 --> 00:34:21,172
And so after a week of almost no sleep and constantly being attacked and barely getting to eat, man, at the end of Warrior Week,

409
00:34:21,492 --> 00:34:28,732
they celebrated the end of it by bringing us back to our main base, and we got to have a big meal.

410
00:34:29,352 --> 00:34:30,512
Oh, my gosh.

411
00:34:30,632 --> 00:34:32,732
The meal after Warrior Week.

412
00:34:32,832 --> 00:34:36,252
I mean, there was silence in the room.

413
00:34:36,312 --> 00:34:39,012
The only sound was, I mean, it was like that.

414
00:34:39,012 --> 00:34:45,152
and you know what happened to everybody in that room they were so hungry it's like every one of

415
00:34:45,152 --> 00:34:52,432
us got tunnel vision we were completely and solely focused on one thing and one thing only

416
00:34:52,432 --> 00:34:58,412
the food on our plate and can we get more of it when it runs out we didn't care about anything

417
00:34:58,412 --> 00:35:05,612
else nothing else mattered to that point because we had gotten so hungry that we just needed a

418
00:35:05,612 --> 00:35:13,392
satisfying meal. Are y'all with me so far this morning? That type of hunger is actually a good

419
00:35:13,392 --> 00:35:19,852
thing. It can be, I'll dare say, it could be a great thing if that hunger is for the right things.

420
00:35:20,892 --> 00:35:27,692
But if you get hungry like that and it gets satisfied the wrong way with the wrong things,

421
00:35:27,832 --> 00:35:34,592
it can be the most destructive thing in your life. Let me give you an example of this. I,

422
00:35:34,592 --> 00:35:40,052
you know, I think about both of my grandfathers, which unfortunately both of them have passed away

423
00:35:40,052 --> 00:35:48,012
now. But both of my grandfathers in their late 50s developed diabetes. And you know, many of you

424
00:35:48,012 --> 00:35:54,272
are familiar with that. And your blood sugar gets all messed up and your body starts reacting in

425
00:35:54,272 --> 00:35:59,172
all these terrible ways. And if you don't address it, it leads to needing to be on dialysis and all

426
00:35:59,172 --> 00:36:05,752
these nasty things. And so they both got diabetes, but they both responded to it completely differently.

427
00:36:06,432 --> 00:36:15,192
So my grandfather on my mother's side completely adjusted and rearranged his hunger and his appetite

428
00:36:15,192 --> 00:36:23,332
and what he fed himself on. And as a result, within a couple of years, his diabetes completely

429
00:36:23,332 --> 00:36:30,512
disappeared. And he was as healthy as a horse. I'm telling you, and he lived well like into his

430
00:36:30,512 --> 00:36:38,212
middle, late 80s. And he was pretty well healthy up to the very end, except for the last little bit

431
00:36:38,212 --> 00:36:44,852
of time. But my other grandfather started out with the exact same scenario, the exact same situation,

432
00:36:45,292 --> 00:36:50,892
except he didn't change anything. He just continued to hunger for what he had always hungered for.

433
00:36:51,132 --> 00:36:53,432
Rather, instead of actually making any changes,

434
00:36:53,432 --> 00:36:56,872
he kind of doubled down on what he had always done.

435
00:36:57,172 --> 00:36:59,732
And we, as his family, we knew he had this condition

436
00:36:59,732 --> 00:37:01,072
and it was deadly for him.

437
00:37:01,232 --> 00:37:03,252
And yet he would come home at the end of the day

438
00:37:03,252 --> 00:37:04,352
and he'd sit on the couch

439
00:37:04,352 --> 00:37:06,352
and he'd eat a gallon of ice cream every evening.

440
00:37:07,572 --> 00:37:09,292
Like the worst thing you could do.

441
00:37:09,732 --> 00:37:12,492
And he's literally destroying his body

442
00:37:12,492 --> 00:37:15,992
and killing himself because of his hunger.

443
00:37:16,732 --> 00:37:20,372
Two grandfathers, two completely different hunger situations,

444
00:37:20,372 --> 00:37:25,752
two very different outcomes, his life was cut a lot shorter. He ended up on dialysis, and he ended

445
00:37:25,752 --> 00:37:35,492
up dying way before his time, all because of how they chose to satisfy their hunger. You see, hunger

446
00:37:35,492 --> 00:37:42,852
and thirst, they drive us. It's this like, it's this base level instinctual desire, this need within

447
00:37:42,852 --> 00:37:49,732
us to be filled, and satisfied, and satiated, and restored, not just in our body, but in our soul.

448
00:37:49,732 --> 00:37:55,992
You know, our souls need to be satisfied. Our souls need to be restored. Our souls need to be

449
00:37:55,992 --> 00:38:02,012
filled and satiated. Our souls hunger just like our bodies hunger. And in fact, I believe God gave

450
00:38:02,012 --> 00:38:07,012
us bodily hunger so that we would have something to understand our soul hunger, which is what

451
00:38:07,012 --> 00:38:12,732
matters the most. Are y'all with me this morning? Think about that. Every time you sit down to eat

452
00:38:12,732 --> 00:38:19,112
a physical meal, think about the meal that your soul also needs just as often. Just as often.

453
00:38:19,732 --> 00:38:26,032
And just like what you feed your body matters, what you feed your soul matters 10 times more.

454
00:38:27,012 --> 00:38:34,392
Are y'all with me this morning? Man, there's nothing better than that moment, that hour,

455
00:38:34,852 --> 00:38:39,472
right after Thanksgiving feast, right after that meal after warrior week, man, right after you've

456
00:38:39,472 --> 00:38:45,292
had that bunch of turkey and that tryptophan coma hits in, and you're just in this like bliss state

457
00:38:45,292 --> 00:38:49,192
of like half consciousness, kind of drooling on yourself a little bit, sitting on the couch,

458
00:38:49,192 --> 00:38:51,772
watching the Cowboys lose or whatever you're doing.

459
00:38:53,672 --> 00:38:54,532
Sorry about that.

460
00:38:54,572 --> 00:38:55,092
That was low.

461
00:38:56,092 --> 00:38:58,552
If you're a Cowboys fan, I'll pray for you after service.

462
00:38:58,632 --> 00:38:59,112
Come see me.

463
00:39:01,292 --> 00:39:03,072
But man, there's nothing better in that moment.

464
00:39:03,172 --> 00:39:04,412
You know why you feel so good?

465
00:39:04,452 --> 00:39:05,712
Because you're satisfied.

466
00:39:06,072 --> 00:39:07,232
You're satiated.

467
00:39:07,432 --> 00:39:10,752
You're basking in the glory of the goodness of God

468
00:39:10,752 --> 00:39:14,152
to provide what you needed in that moment and then some.

469
00:39:14,152 --> 00:39:16,812
And for most of us, it's definitely an and then some.

470
00:39:17,332 --> 00:39:18,852
It's definitely an and then some for me.

471
00:39:19,192 --> 00:39:21,152
But hunger is from God.

472
00:39:21,872 --> 00:39:23,392
It's not just about our body.

473
00:39:23,572 --> 00:39:24,872
It's about our souls.

474
00:39:25,292 --> 00:39:27,732
And what is our soul hunger for at the end of the day?

475
00:39:27,772 --> 00:39:28,912
What is your soul hungry for?

476
00:39:28,952 --> 00:39:29,472
I'll tell you.

477
00:39:29,472 --> 00:39:40,832
Our souls hunger for purpose, for significance, for love, for connection, for belonging, for family.

478
00:39:41,612 --> 00:39:47,852
Our souls hunger for identity, to know who we are really, for an assignment that matters,

479
00:39:47,852 --> 00:39:55,412
for joy, for hope, for peace. Your soul desperately hungers for all of these things, and that's a

480
00:39:55,412 --> 00:40:12,508
God hunger that he put on the inside of every one of you But how you satisfy that hunger matters Let me make a statement this morning Whatever you consume the most will ultimately consume you Whatever you consume

481
00:40:12,508 --> 00:40:18,548
the most of will ultimately consume you. You know, Jesus made a statement about himself at one point.

482
00:40:18,808 --> 00:40:24,708
He literally declared, he said, zeal for God's house has consumed me. And he was echoing what

483
00:40:24,708 --> 00:40:29,188
was written about him in the Psalms hundreds of years before he showed up. He said, zeal for your

484
00:40:29,188 --> 00:40:36,148
passion for God's house has consumed me. That's what Jesus said. He says, I am so in on my walk

485
00:40:36,148 --> 00:40:43,128
with the Father. I'm so in on being on his assignment. I'm so in on who he's given me to be,

486
00:40:43,208 --> 00:40:47,408
this identity that he's given me, and this role that he's given me to play. He said, I'm so in

487
00:40:47,408 --> 00:40:52,268
on the joy and the peace and the hope that I only get from the Father. He says, I'm literally consumed

488
00:40:52,268 --> 00:40:59,068
by it. And Jesus didn't make that statement in scripture just so you can be like, oh, that's cute.

489
00:40:59,148 --> 00:41:06,888
No, that's a cue to you and to me of how we can feel and be the same way. You're designed to be

490
00:41:06,888 --> 00:41:11,688
consumed by something. The problem is most of us are consumed by all the wrong things.

491
00:41:12,688 --> 00:41:17,028
Are you tracking with me this morning? Look at Matthew chapter 5 and verse 6.

492
00:41:18,208 --> 00:41:22,028
Jesus is speaking, Sermon on the Mount, and he makes this statement. He says,

493
00:41:22,268 --> 00:41:29,608
Blessed. Somebody say blessed. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

494
00:41:30,188 --> 00:41:36,968
for they will be filled. What does he mean filled? To be filled means to be satisfied,

495
00:41:37,528 --> 00:41:43,228
to be satiated. He says, when you are hungering for the things of God, he says, you will reach

496
00:41:43,228 --> 00:41:49,428
a place of satiation and satisfaction that goes far beyond the Thanksgiving tryptophan coma.

497
00:41:49,988 --> 00:41:51,388
It's a whole nother level than that.

498
00:41:51,608 --> 00:41:54,228
In fact, look at the same verse out of the message translation.

499
00:41:54,488 --> 00:41:55,628
I love the way this puts it.

500
00:41:55,928 --> 00:41:57,748
Matthew 5, 6 out of the message says this.

501
00:41:58,008 --> 00:42:03,668
It says, you are blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God.

502
00:42:04,268 --> 00:42:09,448
He is food and drink in the best meal that you'll ever eat.

503
00:42:10,508 --> 00:42:11,748
Now, notice what it says.

504
00:42:11,748 --> 00:42:13,948
It says, blessed are you not just when you're hungry.

505
00:42:13,948 --> 00:42:21,628
blessed are you when you have worked up a good appetite for him. In other words, there's a part

506
00:42:21,628 --> 00:42:28,328
that we play in this, that you have this ability to develop, to direct, to stir up your own hunger

507
00:42:28,328 --> 00:42:34,648
within you, and to direct your hunger into what ultimately becomes an appetite. But you know,

508
00:42:34,708 --> 00:42:40,048
hunger and appetite actually aren't the same thing. Hunger is a natural instinct that you have from God.

509
00:42:40,448 --> 00:42:43,148
Appetite is what your hunger develops into

510
00:42:43,148 --> 00:42:46,448
as you create a pattern of how you satisfy that hunger.

511
00:42:47,688 --> 00:42:50,828
See, hunger is natural and appetite is forged.

512
00:42:51,368 --> 00:42:52,648
An appetite is formed.

513
00:42:52,988 --> 00:42:53,668
And let me tell you this,

514
00:42:53,708 --> 00:42:56,168
an appetite is malleable and changeable.

515
00:42:57,208 --> 00:43:00,548
So if you have an appetite for all the wrong things right now,

516
00:43:00,688 --> 00:43:03,348
I've got good news, your appetite can change.

517
00:43:03,348 --> 00:43:07,208
Did you know you can hunger for God

518
00:43:07,208 --> 00:43:09,168
just like Jesus hungered for the Father?

519
00:43:10,048 --> 00:43:17,148
you can actually get to a place where you go, man, zeal, passion for God has absolutely consumed me.

520
00:43:17,388 --> 00:43:20,428
And that is God's will and that is God's heart for you.

521
00:43:21,368 --> 00:43:27,788
And you'll never be more satiated or more satisfied than when you allow him to take you to that place.

522
00:43:28,468 --> 00:43:30,268
Are you tracking with me this morning?

523
00:43:30,268 --> 00:43:35,608
You know, these super saint Christians, you see, they weren't born with a star over their crib.

524
00:43:36,348 --> 00:43:41,428
They just forged an appetite for God, and God rewards them by blessing them.

525
00:43:42,628 --> 00:43:44,768
They get more of what they hunger for.

526
00:43:44,928 --> 00:43:48,768
They get more of what they feed on, and God satisfies their souls.

527
00:43:48,768 --> 00:43:52,688
And you see people like that, and you go, oh my gosh, that's a super Christian.

528
00:43:52,828 --> 00:43:54,328
No, they just followed the word.

529
00:43:55,268 --> 00:43:58,428
The same thing is available to you, and it's available to me.

530
00:43:58,428 --> 00:44:06,988
appetite is what develops over time as we choose how to respond to our god-given soul hunger

531
00:44:06,988 --> 00:44:11,748
what you need is some soul food that's what i'm telling you and i'm not talking about biscuits and

532
00:44:11,748 --> 00:44:18,788
gravy are y'all with me this morning you need food from god for your soul the only food that

533
00:44:18,788 --> 00:44:27,388
satisfies and here's the way appetite works you will hunger for whatever you feed on whatever you

534
00:44:27,388 --> 00:44:35,228
feed on repeatedly, you will develop an appetite and a hunger for. And we know this instinctually,

535
00:44:35,228 --> 00:44:42,788
that taste adapts, that hunger adapts. Some people say, well, I just don't like that food.

536
00:44:43,868 --> 00:44:49,808
Well, the reality is you just don't like it yet. Some of you go, man, I just don't like reading

537
00:44:49,808 --> 00:44:54,788
the Bible. No, no, no. You just don't like reading it yet because you haven't really developed your

538
00:44:54,788 --> 00:45:00,788
taste for it yet. You say, I just don't really enjoy worshiping God in song. No, you don't enjoy it

539
00:45:00,788 --> 00:45:06,708
yet. You're actually designed to be satisfied and satiated by these things, but you haven't

540
00:45:06,708 --> 00:45:12,568
developed your appetite yet. Are y'all tracking with me this morning? You know, we know how this

541
00:45:12,568 --> 00:45:17,268
works. Anybody have kids in here? Do you remember having a three-year-old, four-year-old, five-year-old?

542
00:45:17,268 --> 00:45:23,788
All they want to eat is chicken nuggets and Twinkies. So is that just it? You're like, well, I guess

543
00:45:23,788 --> 00:45:26,508
they're only going to eat chicken nuggets and Twinkies for the rest of your life.

544
00:45:27,248 --> 00:45:30,668
Some parents go with that, and then you end up with 35-year-olds who only eat chicken nuggets

545
00:45:30,668 --> 00:45:34,928
and Twinkies. But most responsible parents are like, no, no, no, no. You're going to eat some

546
00:45:34,928 --> 00:45:37,928
vegetables. You're going to eat some meat. You're going to eat some of these other things, right?

547
00:45:38,008 --> 00:45:41,208
I've got a six-year-old right now. He's in the chicken nugget Twinkie phase.

548
00:45:41,788 --> 00:45:45,808
But I've got a 14-year-old sitting on the front row right now who's developed a nice,

549
00:45:45,808 --> 00:45:52,488
healthy appetite for steak that's bankrupting me. Are y'all with me this morning? It's amazing.

550
00:45:52,828 --> 00:45:56,848
He doesn't want, if I put a steak before him and I put a plate of chicken nuggets and say,

551
00:45:56,908 --> 00:45:57,908
hey son, which one do you want?

552
00:45:57,968 --> 00:45:58,808
What's it going to be?

553
00:45:59,408 --> 00:45:59,968
Steak, right?

554
00:46:00,028 --> 00:46:00,688
Didn't even hesitate.

555
00:46:01,568 --> 00:46:04,648
You asked him that a few years ago and he'd be like, steak, give me the chicken nuggets.

556
00:46:06,068 --> 00:46:07,088
What am I saying to you?

557
00:46:07,188 --> 00:46:09,208
I'm saying, stop being a chicken nugget Christian.

558
00:46:11,188 --> 00:46:12,948
Turn to your neighbor and say, stop being a nugget.

559
00:46:15,168 --> 00:46:17,728
Let me put it another way and we'll put a little image on the screen.

560
00:46:17,728 --> 00:46:22,328
If all you hunger for is Twinkies, don't be surprised when you end up a ding dong.

561
00:46:22,488 --> 00:46:31,048
this part of the sermon brought to you by ai right there okay that's the only thing i used ai for in

562
00:46:31,048 --> 00:46:36,168
this whole sermon i'm like i literally typed it give me an image of a guy becoming a ding dong

563
00:46:36,168 --> 00:46:43,888
and this is what it gave me if all you hunger for is twinkies don't be surprised when you end up

564
00:46:43,888 --> 00:46:51,568
a ding dong you say pastor brian i just got revelation i'm kind of a ding dong what do i do

565
00:46:52,528 --> 00:46:53,708
I'm glad you asked.

566
00:46:54,268 --> 00:46:57,728
2 Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 5 says this.

567
00:46:57,808 --> 00:47:00,068
It says, the spirit of God, here it is,

568
00:47:00,748 --> 00:47:05,448
whets our appetite by giving us a taste.

569
00:47:05,568 --> 00:47:08,128
Somebody say a taste of what's ahead.

570
00:47:08,128 --> 00:47:10,868
He puts a little of heaven in our hearts

571
00:47:10,868 --> 00:47:14,948
so that we will never settle for less.

572
00:47:15,948 --> 00:47:18,408
How many of you are settling for far less

573
00:47:18,408 --> 00:47:26,348
than the heavenly taste that he's been trying to wet your appetite with all along. I love Psalm 34,

574
00:47:26,348 --> 00:47:35,188
verse 8. It says, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are those who take refuge in him.

575
00:47:35,408 --> 00:47:42,268
Taste and see. Somebody say, taste and see. It's like when you're at Costco and they got the free

576
00:47:42,268 --> 00:47:46,668
samples, everybody. Anybody love the free samples at Costco and Sam's, man? You can make a whole meal

577
00:47:46,668 --> 00:47:53,008
out of that. You just make the rounds a couple times, right? But what are those samples designed

578
00:47:53,008 --> 00:47:57,348
to do? They're designed to wet your appetite so that you purchase the product and make a whole

579
00:47:57,348 --> 00:48:02,628
meal out of it. Can somebody say amen? This is what God does for you. You come to a church service,

580
00:48:02,708 --> 00:48:06,848
or you go to a Bible study, or you find yourself in a moment with a family member who's a believer

581
00:48:06,848 --> 00:48:11,068
who's ministering to you, and in that moment, you make sense. Man, God is kind of wetting your

582
00:48:11,068 --> 00:48:16,068
appetite a little bit. He's stirring your heart just a little bit because that bit of heaven that

583
00:48:16,068 --> 00:48:21,988
he's deposited in your soul, recognizes truth, it recognizes his presence, and you begin to hunger

584
00:48:21,988 --> 00:48:28,088
just a little bit for it, and you're like, ooh, I'll have the sample. But many of us stop with

585
00:48:28,088 --> 00:48:38,568
the sample rather than making the purchase. And so you're a Costco Christian. You're just like a

586
00:48:38,568 --> 00:48:42,968
little sample grubber, man, a little sample thief. You come every week to church, and you, ooh, a

587
00:48:42,968 --> 00:48:46,608
little sample of this, little sample of that. Oh, that's tasty or whatever. All right, now I'm going

588
00:48:46,608 --> 00:48:52,428
to go have my regular meal. And I'm saying you need to buy the cow. Are y'all with me this morning?

589
00:48:53,768 --> 00:48:58,248
God, I didn't just call you a cow. That's not what I meant. I'm sorry about that. It's just a metaphor.

590
00:48:59,428 --> 00:49:05,908
You need to buy it, not just eat the samples. And think of it like this. Cars are designed to run on

591
00:49:05,908 --> 00:49:10,228
a certain type of fuel, right? If I get a high-powered sports car that's supposed to take

592
00:49:10,228 --> 00:49:15,128
super premium gas and I start putting unleaded 87 in that thing over and over and over and over

593
00:49:15,128 --> 00:49:19,548
again, eventually that engine's going to stop working. The human body is designed to run on

594
00:49:19,548 --> 00:49:24,328
water and proteins and fats and all these good things that sustains us and satiates us.

595
00:49:24,328 --> 00:49:32,148
The human spirit was designed to run on God alone. I'm going to say that again. The human

596
00:49:32,148 --> 00:49:42,648
spirit was designed to run on God alone. But so many of us are living the Twinkie life rather than

597
00:49:42,648 --> 00:49:48,948
allowing him to satisfy our souls. What are the Twinkies that we put in place of God? Maybe it's

598
00:49:48,948 --> 00:49:56,568
the Twinkie of success. I'm trying to satiate my soul with earthly success. Or the Twinkie of

599
00:49:56,568 --> 00:50:01,188
ambition. These things that you want to accomplish. Or maybe it's the Twinkie of money.

600
00:50:01,188 --> 00:50:07,028
if I could just get more money, if I could just get my financial situation straight, then my soul

601
00:50:07,028 --> 00:50:12,068
will rest. I just need to get that thing going in my life, and then I'm going to be good. Or maybe

602
00:50:12,068 --> 00:50:16,628
it's the Twinkie. That's a weird thing to call a Twinkie. I'm sorry. Maybe it's the Twinkie of

603
00:50:16,628 --> 00:50:22,628
applause. People telling you how great you are, recognizing your hard work, recognizing your

604
00:50:22,628 --> 00:50:27,348
worth, and that Twinkie is what you're trying to satisfy your soul with. And just like an actual

605
00:50:27,348 --> 00:50:31,828
Twinkie, man, it tastes great for a moment, and it leaves you feeling terrible in a little while,

606
00:50:32,128 --> 00:50:38,528
and the more of them you eat, the worse of them you feel. Y'all tracking with me? Maybe it's the

607
00:50:38,528 --> 00:50:42,908
Twinkie of other people. I just need more people in my life. People. I just surround myself with

608
00:50:42,908 --> 00:50:49,388
people, people, people. Maybe it's the Twinkie of family. You're like, it's just all about my family.

609
00:50:49,388 --> 00:50:53,888
It's all about my kids. It's all about our plan, and our, and their college, and their thing,

610
00:50:53,888 --> 00:50:57,268
or whatever, that's my Twinkie. You know what? There's nothing wrong with Twinkies, right?

611
00:50:57,408 --> 00:51:02,368
Have a Twinkie here and there. They're delicious. But they won't satisfy your soul.

612
00:51:03,808 --> 00:51:09,368
All those things, family, great. Success, fine. Money, not a problem, unless you love it more than

613
00:51:09,368 --> 00:51:16,848
God. They're Twinkies. They don't satisfy your soul. Because your soul, the human soul, was

614
00:51:16,848 --> 00:51:24,448
designed to run on God alone. Are y'all with me this morning? Welcome back. I hope you learned a

615
00:51:24,448 --> 00:51:30,308
couple things and I suggest listening to the rest of it because he puts a great bow on this for the

616
00:51:30,308 --> 00:51:36,048
holiday season and explains a lot. He used some terms like the Costco Christian that just gets

617
00:51:36,048 --> 00:51:43,488
samples at the end of the aisle, but doesn't actually read and fill up their hunger with the

618
00:51:43,488 --> 00:51:49,288
word. And he also did the relationship of Twinkies and Ding Dongs. So if you didn't listen to it,

619
00:51:49,348 --> 00:51:53,828
you'll get a good chuckle of that. He's always done a great job of delivering

620
00:51:53,828 --> 00:51:59,408
a sermon that's relevant, using relevant language around us. So it's great.

621
00:52:00,348 --> 00:52:05,188
Donations on the donation front, nothing new in Fountain. We're still trying to get some of the

622
00:52:05,188 --> 00:52:10,448
stuff done with Stripe and all that and the donate button and all that. But if you are using

623
00:52:10,448 --> 00:52:14,708
the fountain app, which I would recommend because it actually shows chapter art and all kinds of

624
00:52:14,708 --> 00:52:19,388
other features. It'll let you know when this is posted, uh, unlike a lot of other apps, uh, that

625
00:52:19,388 --> 00:52:23,948
are out there because you want something that has podcasting 2.0. Uh, there's monthly supporter

626
00:52:23,948 --> 00:52:29,648
options, donation, call outs, all that stuff will be there. So definitely check it out. Thank you.

627
00:52:30,228 --> 00:52:36,268
Um, if you have found this podcast helpful, thank you. I hope, I hope you enjoyed it. Uh,
